DickieB Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Ah, well there you have it. A road car should be driven within road limits, and therefore a standard roll bar should be fine. If you want to do track work, competitively or not, then I would not venture out without a full roll cage with side impact bars. Personal opinion of course. However if you want to drive on the road as though you were on the track, then you will need an RAC roll bar as a minimum. Not to mention a good life insurance policy for your wife to benefit from. To my mind, if you want to drive like you are on a track, then the only place for it is a track. If you want to drive on the road, then drive like you're on the public road expecting to find all the idiots that you normally would. Dickie Quote

sandhurst Posted September 20, 2005 Author Posted September 20, 2005 Reference the Standard Westfield Roll Bar versus an R.A.C. Roll Bar question, I can see the logic of specifying a Standard Roll Bar if the car is going to be driven on Public Roads in a manner befitting the environment. However, might not the attitude of some other drivers [WHO DO DRIVE AS IF THEY ARE ON A RACETRACK] influence the choice? BTW, I have just contacted Westfield who say that the Lockable Boot Lid cannot be fitted in conjunction with the RAC Roll Bar. Dave Quote
Blatman Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 BTW, I have just contacted Westfield who say that the Lockable Boot Lid cannot be fitted in conjunction with the RAC Roll Bar. An attitude from the factory that grinds on me greatly, and not the first time (or last) that we'll hear it. It actually means "We don't have the parts/time/inclination to make the necessary adjustments". And if they don't think it would be possible to turn a profit from it then that's fair enough. But to say blankly that it can't be done is just nonsense, and in some cases puts people off the marque entirely by putting up apparently impassable barriers to the customer. Anyhow... There are several cars out there with RAC bars and lockable boot lids. It is do-able with some care and a little effort... Quote
tonyl42 Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 Darn it! And I was going for oldest WF owner at 63. A mere stripling, but at least I may be the oldest Eleven builder. Tony Quote
sandhurst Posted September 20, 2005 Author Posted September 20, 2005 I must say that I agree with Blatman's comments on what Westfield say they can and cannot do. For the sake of accuracy, I quote from their e-mail reply to my queries [the questions asked should be obvious]: The RAC specification roll bar does not fit with the lockable boot box because of the way the boot box lid opens. Due to the chroming process we are unable to offer the RAC roll bar in chrome. Should you choose to have the RAC roll bar we have now modified the hood frame to fit the RAC roll bar. Either of the tonneau's fit the car with a RAC roll bar. End of quote. It is interesting to hear that "there are several cars out there with RAC bars and lockable boot lids. It is do-able with some care and a little effort". I would appreciate any suggestions as to how this can be done. Also, do I just buy an un-fitted boot lid from Westfield ready for modification by myself? Dave Quote
sandhurst Posted September 20, 2005 Author Posted September 20, 2005 Sorry Tony, that my date of birth is slightly earlier than yours - I blame my father. The medal collectors forum I visit ran a poll of members ages [in blocks of 10 years] and, for a while, I was on the podium! Then along came a couple of "ticks" in the 80 to 90 group - made me feel positively bouncing with youth. Maybe this forum should do a poll - it would be interesting to see the spread of age groups [maybe with a section for penalty points - only joking, I know you all stick to the speed limits].
