Here's one I can't fathom on my home PC.

Win98SE

Broadband via Alcatel Speedtouch Modem.

Zone Alarm Pro.

Norton Anti Virus.

Recently "upgraded" from IE5.01 to IE6 SP1 from the MS download/critical update site. On start up, the dial up dialogue box now displays automatically and freezes the rest of the boot processes until I cancel it, or choose to connect to the internet (I don't like letting it auto connect, hence the dial up box appearing). It's bl**** annoying.

I've done some fiddling with the internet settings and tools, as well as checking through the "dial up" settings and all the usual control panel stuff. Nothing appears in the MSConfig stuff either. The only thing I haven't checked, as far as I can see, is the registry. Any ideas anyone?

Nice one. :t-up:

I spent *ages* on Microsoft last night and never came across that.

I'm prety sure my Startup folder is empty, or maybe has one programme in it...

I have a Lexmark printer, although it's never switched on until the machine has booted, and I have already disabled the Lexmark programme from starting at boot up.

I wonder if Zone Alarm is looking for updates too? I thought I'd disabled the "Search for updates" selection in ZA. But I changed/tried so much last night I could have re-installed IE 4 and Windows 95 without realising...

I note that the product list doesn't include Win98SE, but it's the closest I've seen yet to a fix.

Regedit here I come...

Thanks again David :)
