adhawkins Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 I don't think the Highway code is actually law... Could be wrong... Andy Quote
SteveF Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 As it is - we have already been taxed - and paid for the police to bring a pointless prosecution when a bit of common sense (proportionality as the HSE would put it) would have suggested that a good b0ll0cking by whover pulled her over would have been a lot more effective in making her think not to do it again - and saved a (media) estimated £10k of taxpayers money - how many more speeding tickets will be needed to make that up Quote
pistonbroke Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 goodness me If you take all these issues about what you musn't do while driving , like not eating, not smoking , not tuning the radio , not picking your nose and god knows what else into account. Then we should all be liable to be fined for some reason, because think of the effect of inconsiderate acts like coughing, (hand goes to mouth automatically) blinking ( cant see when eyes shut) cramp ( and god knows what else) ever thought what the effect of an uncontrollable sneeze at the wrong time might be ? should we be fined for sneezing ? The point is if you want to make motoring 100% safe then the only way is to keep the car permanantly off the road ,locked away in the garage . does anyone here think they are so good as to never have an accident in there precious little toy then think again . Meanwhile another Cheif Constable gets a reprimand for being p******** in charge instead of being kicked off the force Quote

cidersurfer Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 What about picking your nose? Is it allowed as long as you don't eat it? Quote
mark.anson Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Sarah McCaffery loses her case after 10 court appearances... £10,000 pounds to pursue the most absurd prosecution I have heard of to date. A police helicopter was involved, after police officer sw a woman with her right hand to her face while negotiating a right hand bend, and he stopped her assuming she was on a mobile phone. It turns out she was eating an apple, but he slapped a £30.00 on the spot fine on her, which she - as anyone would - refused to pay. The upshot was that the magistrates eventually upheld the police fine, and justice (ahem) was done! Can anyone see any point in that? Dont know the exact circs, but I find it hard to believe a ticket would be issued under the exact circumstances that have been reported! Although responses like **ck off, or have you got F*ck all better to do, when stopped is usually a good intro into getting a ticket!..... just a thought. And for the record, no I dont believe it was right. I also find it difficult to see how the helicopter could have seen anything, unless a)she was driving a convertible, b) the helicopter had landed next to her or c) she was eating a radioactive apple? ChrisG Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 The next legislation will no doubt involve reintroducing the chap walking in front of your car with a red flag to warn others you're approaching Quote

ChrisG Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 I think the helicopter was used after the incident to take pictures of the road layout to prove how "irresponsible" she was Quote
James Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 she was negociating a turn whilst eating? sounds like a pretty stupid thing to do to me... Agreed. If she only had one hand on the wheel and had to avoid a hazard could she have? I think most of us have done this sort of thing at some time or another but that does not make it right. I agree with matt but at the sasme time alot of insurance companys now take fixed penalty fines into consideration when working out your pemium and therefore I can understand why anyone would fight this. To be hounest I do wonder what this country/world is coming to it seems to me that ordinery folk are being crimanalised for no good reson. I was threatend with a fine and prosacution yesterday because I put one bag of rubish out to many, so what was my response........... I drove it down to the council offices and dumped it on the receptionists desk. they then had to deal with it! this political corectness and burocracy is going way over the top when will someone with sence stand up to it? jonlewis Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 You can ask Gillian Taylforth about that !! Silly thing is, they were in an old Range Rover which has the stereo on the drivers right... she could have just said she was changing channel. Quote
