david.c Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 The best approach I've found is to rest the nozzle in the entrance to the filler neck, squeeze the pump handle gently and aim the fuel at the back of the filler neck so it goes down into the tank. Pushing the nozzle all the way in is a recipe for fuel splashing back and the pump cutting out all the time Ditto......................... Martin Keene Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 although next time I'm going to try pointing the pump at the back of the neck. But won't you just get a wet back and no fuel in the tank. Quote
dawsac Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 I think I've just sussed this one, try putting the filler in upside down, worked for me. Quote
a4gom Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 It takes me ages too, it does depend on the pump though. I always have a full jerry can in the garage and fill to the brim before I set off, can empty the can in at full bore no probs takes a couple of mins to do the 5 gallons. Still have the problem if I need a mid blat fill up though. Quote
dern Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 I think I've just sussed this one, try putting the filler in upside down, worked for me. That works for me... I can fill my car up in about an hour but that includes people asking me questions like "why are you squating in that puddle of petrol mister?" When I build that part of the locost I'll have the petrol filler on the top. Quote
Buzz Billsberry Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 I used to have similar probs as most with my red car but the V8 U just stick it in and squeeze so to speak and it fuels fine. I don't know if its cos of the LR tank but more possibly the return breather pipe tho/ Buzz Quote
Toby Mack Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 This really annoyed me so I decided to do something about it. I think later tanks might be different but my tank had the filler pipe coming out of the right hand side then a 90 bend back, rising slightly to the filler cap. i.e. the pipe was almost horizontal so any frothing came straight back out the filler. I have now cut the pipe where it goes into the tank and rejoined it with some hose. The pipe is now rotated up so it is almost vertical and the filler cap is in the back corner of the bootbox. I also fitted a tank breather. Previously I could only fill the tank using min speed from most pumps. I can now fill it almost full speed until the tank is 3/4 full where I have to ease up a bit as it still froths up a bit. I was a little worried that the joining hose would weep petrol as it is immersed when the tank is full but it appears ok so far. If it does start leaking I'll have to remove the tank again and get the pipe welded in the new position. If I remember tonight I will post pics of the mod. Quote
Tubs Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Same as NickM. Fulll insertion will have the pump clicking off every two seconds. Damn annoying. Firing the fuel at the lower rear of the filler neck has me fuelled quick enough that the ensuing top up/peer in tank/top up some more/peer in tank mallarkey takes up the most time..... I've never managed full insertion. So I just peer in, aim at the back and shoot. Can take a while though Quote
Toby Mack Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 in case anyone is interested, here is my modded filler. Quote
PapaLazarou Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 I actually got run over on the forecourt of my local garage because of this ****** problem. I was in the traditional crouch, trickling in Shells finest, when WALLOP! Myopic chinese lady drives into the back of me, trapping me between her car and mine. Then, in a blind panic, she goes for reverse, puts it back into first and DOUBLE WALLOP! Pushes me and the car down the forecourt until the pump hose was taught... Fuggin women drivers.. (sorry) Quote
a4gom Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Myopic chinese lady drives into the back of me, any free take aways? Quote
Paul Ash Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Pain in the Got the new WF aero cap, so push nozzle throught flap, if you get too ambitious it overflows through the breather holes And I have breather fitted along with transfer pipe from filler neck to otherside of tank!! Quote
Toby Mack Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 don't know if the later tanks are the same but the baffles in mine work a bit too well imho! I tried filling mine with a hosepipe and the centre compartment was only 1/2 full when the 1st compartment overflowed. So you need to go slow just to deal with the tank, let alone the stupid filler design! I think it would be better if the baffles were not full height. Quote
geelhoed Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Patience, grasshopper! Mine's a 2004 and it fills up quite nicely. Takes about 3mins for 20 liter. Quote
Toby Mack Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 looking at the pic on the westfield website the current tanks have the filler going into the top of the tank. I think this will make a BIG difference. The trouble with my tank is the fuel has to go down the filler pipe then turn 90 deg before going into the tank below the top of the tank. This is just asking for frothing in the filler which is exactly what happens. And with the filler cap only being a couple of inches above tank level it just vents on your shoes. A mate has a locost which just has a vertical pipe into the top of the tank. He could fill it full speed in a couple of minutes, pay up and leave before my tank was half full. With my mods, hopefully I will not get left behind quite so much in the future! Quote
