Dear all,

Yes, I have decided that the time has come for me to sell my beloved BMW 328i and buy a proper sports car!.. and there's no question - it has to be a Westy. My dad built one when I was young and I have loved them ever since.

Here are the problems though:

1. I know a nice looking Westfield when I see one, but to be completely honest I know jack all about cars and engines and I don't understand half of the descriptions I read on the ads! As I would be keeping the car somewhere in London (sadly many miles away from my mechanically minded dad and brother!;) I would need an engine that would require only light maintenance.

2. I am a bit of a petrol head so the car would need the ability to take me from 0-60 in around the 5 second mark!

3. I wouldn't intend on thrashing it (much) but it would be good to have something I could use for the odd track day.

4. How do I know that I am not buying something that will fall into pieces within days? Are there any obvious signs to look out for that a car's engine has had an exceptionally 'hard' life?

5. I like the newer styled versions with the lockable boot / nice alloys etc

6. My budget is only around £8-9k (maybe a little more)

Ultimately, I would really appreciate some advice from all you fanatics on the sort of car I should be looking out for with regard to engine / suspension / gearbox / set up factory built / private build / age etc etc. Similarly, what should I be keeping clear of? Is my budget realistic? The last thing I want to do is rush into it and have a nightmare on my hands.

Many thanks,

Mark

:) …..first, welcome, Mark.

:0 …..second, why not join club; it makes sense if you’re going to buy a Westfield

:0 …..third, most of your question can be answered if you do a search, as similar questions have been asked a number of times recently

:0 ….local meetings are a good place to meet up other Westfield owners and do a bit of tyre kicking and score a few test rides (as a passenger). The Stoneleigh kitcar show is nearly upon us and you’ll be able to see literarily hundreds of different Westfields and speak with their respective owners.

Your budget is perfectly reasonable. Should get you a fairly new (about 5 years old) 16V engined wide body without too much trouble. My 1997 2.0 Zetec engined car was under 9k just before Christmas.

You are just into ultra reliable VX territory with that budget  :p  :p

Standard engine with carbs 180 bhp, 140+ at the wheels and up to 280 bhp if you`ve got the money  :0

Go on go on go on go on   ;)
