Winter tinkering completed....

Almost everything I do to the Westfield is an education. This year, I learned that unless some self-restraint is exercised, the winter tinkering list can lose lots of valuable summer driving time. I won't make that mistake again, as I missed a couple of epic Peak District meetings.

The problem is that one job naturally leads to another and before I knew what was happening, I had a rolling chassis in the garage and a collection of yellow fibreglass at my favoured bodyshop.

However, yesterday, I completed the last few jobs and even managed to take it out for a drive - as an added bonus, nothing worked loose, fell off, leaked out or generally did anything it shouldn't.

The list:-

  • Make new boot box with blended in pipes for roll bar diagonals
  • Make new hinged boot box lid with no visible surface fixings
  • Make electric (and back-up mechanical) release for boot box lid
  • Add carbon bits
    • Rear diffuser
    • Flared side panels (painted)
    • Cycles wings (painted)
    • Front indicator pods
    • Boot lid
    • Rear number plate holder
  • Body-off respray
  • Move rear bonnet mounting points to lower side panel
  • New rear light pods
  • Replace all rear lights with clear LEDs
  • Replace rear braided brake lines
  • Fit easy-bleed type nipples (Sierra rear calipers are a pain to bleed)
  • Replace crank front oil seal

Not a massive list, I grant you, but some of the jobs were fiddly - mounting the rear of the diffuser with Aerocatches, devising hinges to keep the rear boot lid flush when closed, coming up with small mesh grilles for the rear edge of the flared side panels.

I actually had visions of not making it back onto the road before the weather turned, but a few long weekends and an understanding wife means I've got it done.

So - any other stories of well-intended winter tinkering that got out of hand?

I was off the road 2.5 years with engine upgrades.

yeah, I reckon I’m only just short of 2.5 years off the road, between start and at least being drivable again. (Not actually finished yet, either!)
