Anyone know this westfield ?- green - st170 engine

Hi guys 

 

anyone know this westfield?  I believe it belonged to someone on here a few years back and was tracked - not sure if they are still about

 

the current owner has only had it 6 months

 

its a good spec but it is quite old 1995 registered I beleive 

any info / advise much appreciated

Used to be Keith's, with a Crossflow in I think?

 

Was a nice car last time I saw it, maybe 5 years ago!

I'm pretty sure its changed hands a few times over the last few years. But I may be mistaken for another car that looks very much like it

I looked at this as a possible replacement for mine as it had a cage and mores powers a few months ago as it has lots of nice bits, 

one thing to consider its narrow body which does affect resale on the car itself, and who can fit in. (this my opinion of course).

Narrows a bit restrictive...I have one though, and preferred for racing I believe, possibly due to weight?

 

dont be put off by older cars as chassis metalwork much better spec than much newer cars.....obviously depends on usage and storage though.

 

Have a look at one of the old se narrows being stripped currently on the build threads...the chassis has literally come up like new with zero worries of corrosion!

Thats down to the quality of the coating on the chassis though, nothing to do with the chassis itself.

Partly, but in the (later) Westfield chassis issue with powder coating, it's primarily down to coating issues. I've had trouble with chassis sections that have had protective coat over the top, ACF50 over winter etc, and any scratches sealed immediately. However the powder coats adhesion has been so poor in areas, it's lifted anyway.

 

The story I've been told from a few sources, is that the chassis at least, when my last one was coated, are not blasted on site, but at an outside contractors. They then have to be shipped back to the powder coaters, where they will have already started picking up light flash rust, and greasy finger marks from handling. I guess this then was not always being properly cleaned off before the coating was applied.

That’s interesting. Do you know when they started powder coating frames? My car is listed as a 2006, but think it was built maybe 2004 by the factory. It’s painted and I think still original paint. Barely a spot of rust.

In think we got ours at around the same time - yet mine appears to be holding up very well. Luck of the draw I guess!

Its been available for at least two, if not three decades or more. But here’s the key. It’s an option, for the chassis, it’s not, or wasn’t, standard.

 

However, and here in my personal view is the problem; for at least the last twenty years, buyers, keen to get deals have been “talking” the factory into giving them the powder coating option for the chassis, for free as an extra. On the surface, this seems great, in reality we often, though not always, these days, get exactly what we paid for. And we paid nothing. Because it’s being given away, I guess it’s done as cheaply as possible, to save costs.

 

The net result, is a lottery, as Chris said, plenty of chassis are ok, not brilliant, but ok. But some, like mine, were absolute horror stories in the end. Now of course, the amount of use and how the vehicle is stored etc will have a significant effect on how quickly any defects are revealed. 
 

Since then, any high weathering chassis items that I’ve got that I’ve been able to re-powder coat, (the chassis seemed out of the question to re do at the time, but in hindsight I should have), like the wishbones, I’ve had stripped, zinc primered and then powder coated. (The wishbones also then have paint protection film over the top).

 

If re doing the chassis, or buying a new one, I would get it unfinished, then take it to a specialist, to have it hot-zinc (spray) coated, before powder coating.

One thing to bear in mind is that the body tub is a pre-lit and no longer available should it need replacing - pre-lit body tub last produced 1987/88.

 

The pre-lit body tub was able to fit both pre-lit chassis and a later SE narrow body chassis. If you look at the chassis rails and see circular tube members to top rails in engine bay its possible that its a pre-lit chassis from 87/88 era at latest, square tubing would make it a narrow body SE chassis. Date of registration does not fully determine original year of manufacture, some builds take years.

Interesting. I always thought that the actual material quality back in the 90s was superior to today's, and possibly slightly thicker?

 

Regarding powder coating, it's a process that can be very good or extremely poor, totally dependant on preparation, just like any other surface treatment.
