Senders are normally matched to gauges, they aren't universal as such.

What brand gauge is it VDO, Smiths, ETB?

I think it is a Smiths - but the car is at work, so will have to double check in the morning.

Having checked, it is a Racetech gauge.

So I am looking for a sender unit for a Racetech oil temp gauge.

I measure it as  3/8" thread.

Why do you want to measure bulk oil temperature? I'd be more interesting in the main gallery temperature, as this is the oil the bearings are about to receive.

It's quite common. Mine was like that too, it's how SBD had there dry sump tanks made. The theory is it's important to know the temperature of the oil your about to feed into the bearings, I suppose. (Or at least, I seem to recall that was the consensus reached when it was debated on here several years ago.)
