New GoPro Cameras!

Recommended Posts

It's that time of year again! A few of you will no doubt already have seen bits of info about the latest range of GoPro cameras floating about on the internet, but now there is a release date I thought I'd give you guys a heads up. I have these on the way and they can be sold on 5th October.

The main difference this time seems to be that the cameras are properly 'targeted' at a type of user rather than all being fairly similar with a few tweaks. They are all backwards compatible with all the existing mounts, which is a good idea IMO.

The Hero 4 Black - £369.99

This is the 'pro' level camera, and will now capture 4k (about 4x as high quality as full 1080p HD!) at a useable 30 frames per second, and also has manual exposure settings available. It will munch through memory card space quickly though, and require a pretty powerful bit of kit to edit on as a result.

The Hero 4 Silver - £289.99

This is the mid-range camera, full of features and designed to be more user-friendly for the normal user. It now includes a rear touch screen so no more scrolling through menus to change settings! The quality of the footage is the same as the Hero3+ Black, with full HD footage, decent audio and wi-fi connectivity included.

The Hero - £99.99

This camera hits a completely new price point and I reckon it will be a good seller! It's still full HD (1080 and 720 modes available), is waterproof to 40m and compatible with all the mounts. It also has a 1-button mode (the camera turns on and starts recording with just one single button press, ideal for track days I reckon), auto low light mode

The main difference between this and the other two, and how GoPro have managed to get it down to such a good price, is that the camera is built in to the housing. The battery is also built into the camera. For charging and memory card access the rear door of the 'housing' comes open, but the camera cannot be removed.

All of them require a Micro SD card as before, which are approx £10-20 on eBay (depending on size) if you haven't already got one.

The discount code WSCCGOPRO will work on this new range once they are on the site ready to buy: http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/cameras/c551.html. I also have some of the existing cameras on clearance (which the discount code will still work on!) if you fancied a bit of a bargain.

As always if you have any questions please don't hesitate to shout up :t-up:

Cheers,
Adam

That simple Hero is a great idea at a good price point. Might even get one for rear facing duties... catch all angles of a spin!

Debit card at the ready!

I was thinking exactly the same thing actually - could also be quite nifty pointed at your feet. You can learn a lot about your driving from a view like this:

(You'll need to stick it in HD or the track 'annotations' don't show up very well)

I had a go at trying to put the video together using two cameras and it was so frustrating I sold my original HD Hero and jsut kept the Hero2. However given that you can sync them together better I'd almost be tempted if it weren't for the PC limitations! Need a lottery win and a Mac Pro with some uber spec and a copy of Final Cut Pro!

Mark (smokey mow)

I use Racerender for synchronising the videos from my 3 gopro cameras. It's free to download and pretty easy to use.

Hi Adam,

Any idea on the battery life on the Hero 4 silver? I only have the Hero 2 HD but the battery life on that is shocking and I can imagine a touch screen LCD not helping that much?

Would be very interested in a Hero 3+ Black if you've got any cheeky little deals going?

Cheers

Thanks David, appreciated!

As Mark says, Racerender is a good tool for doing this. I don't have a mega-spec PC and it will handle the 720p footage pretty nicely.

Thanks for the heads up.  Put me down for one of the cheap ones.  I've been using a Veho Muvi for the past few years and whilst excellent value, and a simple way into in-car, its a bit basic.

Great, thank you. If you like I can get our system to send you an email when they are ready to go? Just fire me a PM with your email address if you'd like me to do so. Thanks!

What kind of discount with the code we looking at?

Ben

The discount is 7%, and free post if the order total is over £100.

Hi Kevin - Battery life isn't mentioned anywhere in the product documentation at the moment. I agree that an LCD screen would sap the battery life some more though. I would anticipate the battery capacity to have been increased like it has for the previous versions, but can't say for sure until I've checked one for myself. Being honest the battery life has always been a little bit of a niggle with the GoPros since they are such a small camera and doing so much stuff, but I'd anticipate at least an hour and a half with 'careful' use of the LCD.

Unfortunately (or fortunately!) we managed to shift all our 3+ Blacks before news of the Hero4, but I do have some Hero3+ Silvers in which are now going at less than my cost price: http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/cameras/gopro_hero_3_silver/c551p12239.html - can still get your 7% discount and free post on that price too.

Cheers all,

Adam

Thanks Adam, I'm torn, I almost ordered the Hero 3+ Silver but I think for the extra £80 I could really use the night timelapse and the 240 fps low res shooting. I'd go for it if I thought the battery would be ok in the Hero 4 silver, it's lower capacity than the Hero3+ and has a screen...

Might have to wait for it to come out and see how the battery performance is

There's a review I found useful here: http://gizmodo.com/gopro-hero4-hands-on-action-cam-goes-beast-for-a-pric-1640225592

It notes that the new batteries are slightly lower capacity than the old - although the new 'insides' may make up (more that make up) for that slight drop.  But its not clear yet.

It also notes that the LCD switches itself off quite quickly - prolonging battery life.  Again, no long-term testing of exactly how long results though :)

Adam - is the battery built into the "The Hero" or can i get a spare battery to change over on a day out?
