Seight steering rack

My Seight was, I guess, a rolling chassis when it left the factory in 1996. I now have very slight play in the rack (I can move the pinion a few degrees without the rack moving) - no problem with MOT or drivability, but I know it's there. I have looked around, and the rack of choice is the Escort Mk1/2? But my rack does not look like an Escort rack - it does not have any adjustment capability (which I think the Escort rack has?)

Any idea what rack Westfield factory fitted to the Seight in 1996?

My 1996 seight is a mk2 escort rack

I have changed it once

Put a quick rack in

The escort rack does not have the steering stops in it do if you don't have ride track the cycle wings may touch the body

Thanks Smokin. I have just been to the Westfield spares site, and they list a rack that looks just like mine (i.e. not like an Escort rack), and say it is made by Westfield - costs £177. Strange that it appears different to your Seight. Does yours look like this - http://parts-shop.westfield-sportscars.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=523&search=steering+rack ?

When Escort steering racks started becoming a bit thin on the ground in scrapyards etc, Westfield commissioned their own version. What this means is that if you buy an Escort rack, it is a straight swap (not withstanding the steering lock stops Simon mentions above) for the Westfield unit...

Intersting, and very useful, thanks.  So any MK1 / 2 Escort 2.4 rack should do the job? Any idea what the MOT linit is on play? I probably have about 5degrees.

You also need to consider how quick the steering rack is. A standard Escort rack is much slower than a standard Westfield one. A quick Westfield rack is even more direct. Short steering arms even more so, at the expense of perhaps needing Popeye like forearms to turn it :) . I replaced the Escort rack in my car for this reason with a standard Westy one. It makes a big difference to how the car feels to drive. See this thread for a recent discussion.

Thanks all, I think I'll go for a 2.4 Escort rack, maybe after MOT, as I have less than 13mm play.
