Andy Banks Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Just been chatting with my local garage and we picked up on all the physical paperwork we collect when getting an MOT and Tax. We talked about the new tax system where you dont get a physical disk to display and he said that it seems not possible to get a refund on car tax when the new rules come in. Is this true? If so if we SORN, we don't get a refund? Seems a bit harsh so wondered if anyone here had more info... Quote
SootySport Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 You can't pass on the tax to a new owner if you sell the car but Refunds? I would have thought that continues. Quote
Young Pretender Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I'm guessing that if you pay VED monthly you won't ever have a need for a refund - just stop paying when you sorn? (assuming sorn still possible?) Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Monthly payments usually cost more in other areas. It would be nice if you could have a pro-rata daily rate for refunds. Quote
jonjh1964 Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Comes into effect on 1 Oct 14 with an additional 5% charge if you pay monthly. No mention of any changes to SORN or not being able to get a refund on the gov.uk website. Needs a change to the Law so the final details will be subject to that I suppose. Quote
dombanks Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 cant wait for pay monthly i think its a great idea. if you just buy 6 months you get stung with a charge anyway so i dont see what the difference is. Quote
Stuart Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 At the moment if you pay for a year then SORN after 7 months there's no loading though. Quote
Wile E. Coyote Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Would be nice if you could pre-buy say 8 months of tax and auto SORN after that. 1st of March you're back on the road til the end of Oct... Bet it hasn't been considered/won't happen though. Quote
Lawrie Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 This is what the BBC said a couple of months ago http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-25223631 and there doesn't seem any more recent news. In order to catch the dodgers, the DVLA & Police rely on automatic number plate recognition, hence plod gets upset about non standard plates, and I start to worry about the sticky plate on the nose of my pre SVA car. Has anyone found this a problem yet? I think you'll be able to keep an untaxed car in the street, as long as you don't drive it past a camera up a lamppost or on a gantry, or one of the camera cars drives past. Those that pay road tax, have used the reporting website 160,000 times http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/onlineservices/report_unlicensed.aspx?ext=dg which helps get rid of dumped cars Quote

The car would need to be declared as SORN and parked off the road such as on the driveway. Quote

Yes, but the muppets who do this sort of thing will probably get away with it, as you can only catch them by computer, not an expired piece of paper in the window Quote

There are also a lot of Council and Housing association car parks which technically are not the public highway but as far as the road laws go, parked cars need to be taxed as well. Quote
