POTENTIAL OWNER NEEDS ADVICE

Hi All

I have always loved the Seven type cars and am considering selling my Harley Ultra and buying a wide body Westfield. Have looked at a couple and see a potential problem which I hope can be overcome. I am a 5ft 10" chap with a "fuller figure"!!, I can get in and out OK (just) but I have to have the seat right back to be comfortable on the pedals. Unfortunately, the steering wheel is a bit far away for comfortable driving and I don't think I have particularly short arms.

My question is, can the steering column be adjusted to bring the wheel back towards the driver in any way. I also wondered if fitting a detachable boss would move the wheel back enough? Or is there another solution. I can't be the first owner to have this problem, how have others solved it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

yep adding a removeable wheel will help or you can just change the upper steering column. Playskool make to any size you want.

I similarly sit as far back as possible and the steering wheel is too far away. There are a number of options to bring it closer. A detachable boss will, in my experience with other cars, do this. My plan is a new wheel (probably flat bottomed), detachable boss and then see if a simple extender is required.

I fancy this idea, but im thinking I'll defo need a detachable steering wheel then, as getting in and out will become a problem with the steering wheel being nearer-

By the time I fitted a new boss, quick release hub, adaptor plate and 270mm wheel it must have moved the wheel something like 3-4 inches closer to me, and is much more comfortable.....BUT because I'm so tall and have the seat so far back the wheel really doesn't get in my way when getting in and out when fitted.

Cars like Westfields offer plenty of customising options to get them just right for the individual driver. Some are quick and simple, others a bit trickier. 

 

Some excellent suggestions so far, I use a detachable wheel with about an inch and a half's total spacer added to it, while the column itself was extended about half an inch when the quick release adaptor was added.

 

Different size and shape wheels also make quite a difference to how comfortable the steering is.

 

In addition, the column is typically mounted to the car with spacer blocks, which by adding too, or removing from, raise or lower the column up away or down towards your knees.

 

Different seat options move you round the cockpit quite an amount to, from laid back, arms stretched out, knees raised, to a slightly more upright shoulders that bit nearer the wheel position.

 

Cars are also available with or without dropped (lowered) floors, this can be retrofitted, but it's a complicated specialist job really.

Just adding a detachable boss adds between 20 and 60mm. alone then you can also add spacers. All easily done.

Many thanks for all responses - seems that being short armed overweight chap is no barrier to owning a Westfield !!!

oh didn't realize it was those spacers you were referring to. Ive got the crappy boss kit with the pcd of about 100mm- where know one seems to do an extension for- and using a conversion plate means then using a different wheel- maybe Im better off extending the upper section of column?

Yes, not anything available for 100pcd wheels.    You need to convert everything to 70/74mm for a broad range of options.   Or, have a word with Filfan, he's a dab hand at fabricating adaptors 100 to 70 pcd.
