Steering boss

Hi all

I'm looking for a replacement steering boss as I have bought a new steering wheel and I can't find one anywhere. My current boss is a 100mm pcd with 6 bolt pattern (fits old mountney steering wheel). It has a 40 spline shaft hole and the hole for the spline tapers from 20mm dashboard side to 12mm wheel side. I need to find either a 70mm pcd 6 hole boss or an adapter from my new wheel to the existing boss.

FYI I believe that the original steering column came from a ford but I can't be sure

Any ideas

Cheers

There's a few clues to working out what column you might have :)

Does the boss attach to the column with a nut or a bolt fixing?

Is the outer part of the column a steel tube which is welded onto the chassis and the dash hoop or is it a separate column which bolts on?

What does the ignition barrel look like and how does it attach to the column.?

What year was your chassis made (the date stamped on the vin not the date of registration on the v5)?

If it looks like this it's allegro...

B614CCE4-D926-4090-BFD0-F7ECC4B4EF47-456

Close up behind dash, where Smokey described,

F95CB555-3057-4C2E-9F21-D96032E80441-148

I know it's not ford, but gives you a definite "It's not that one."

As for the PCD, 12 hole universal ones will most wheels, what wheel did you get? Europa spares do a good selection of bosses, as do Merlin motorsport. I don't think any wscc traders do them.

I can't be certain, but it looks like it may be an escort column, the top mount is non standard and has clarly been modified, I assume to raise the wheel a bit higher. Those welds look pretty poor :o

What year is your chassis?

Agree with Mark, top nut appears Escort, either MkI or II, but I'm thrown by the ignition lock...

Hi all. Thanks for the info. I'm a noob when it comes to westies. How do I find the chassis year?? The car was first registered in 2001.

I think the engine is from an escort so that would make sense. Getting back to my original query. Can I get an escort colum to 70mm pcd steering boss and if so where is the best place to look?

Cheers

unfortunately the engine is not a clear indicator of the source of the column.

Through the years Westfield have basically only used 4 different columns, the early cars were fitted with escort columns whereas later cars were Allegro. The SDV's are fitted with either Sierra or Mazda depending on which you have.

Your cars steering column however appears to have been modified in some way, and therefore it may be fitted with something different to the above.

As for the 70mm PCD question, yes you can.

Where in the country are you? If near Staffs Europa Spares have many in stick, take your car and a socket. Then find out which fit. Take your boss in and chances are the guy will just tell you what it is... Then try it on to make sure.

It looks escort to me, but been played with.

Have a look in my profile for a similar thread I started.

Look at my pics. They are of a MK2 Escort column. I think yours is the same.
