  8. Absolutely, Patrick has been a breath of fresh air in his approach, but let's not forget Simon's shake up of things, that has enabled Patrick to do the fine work he is doing.

  9. Hi WillC, If you are unable to get this. You can replace the pivot pin on the gearbox with a part from Kit Spares TRA0019, and then fit a standard ford release bearing. I have done this on a few so know it works Malcolm

  10. Well, that didn't go well! I told him I felt the labour charge was on the high side and asked what his hourly rate was and he stated it was £58.90 + VAT = £70.68. This equated to 5.5 hours work and I asked for a breakdown which he gave as follows: 2 hours for the service, 2 hours for the disc and pad changes and 1.5 hours for the switch changes. When I queried the switch changes he went off on one about being in business and I don't understand what's involved in these things and that's his price and he's sticking to it. I clearly was not going to get anywhere and the trust element had gone so decided to bite the bullet and told him I would not be returning with at least 3 MOT tests and 2 tiptop services per year. He replied that was fine. There endeth the tale and I will now start looking for another small independent garage. However, in future I will make sure to ask the right questions beforehand and I admit to being at fault for not doing so on this occasion. His loss, not mine and he certainly won't be getting any recommendations from me. Thanks for all your views and comments. This is such a good club

  14. Second the terrano, especially the 3.0 litre version which is more economical than the 2.7 litre one. My son has had a number of them and they have been really rugged as he works as a forester. However you now have to watch the chassis very carefully as they are really prone to rust, especially the newer ones (his last one had the chassis snap just behind rear wheels)The older ones are more prone to body rot. Having said all the above he would go back to a terrano at the drop of a hat if he could find one without too much rust. hope this helps

  22. Double cab pickup. Taxed as a commercial so cheap. Lots of older ones in your budget, most will easily tow 2T and more. It's bottom end of the market so choose carefully.

  27. I'm not the best on engine building, but i know something about engine failures. This failure, looks unlikely to me to be related to oil pressure. When is a lubrication problem in the rods bearings, normally the rod grips to the crank, the rod bends and then snaps in the weakest section of the rod witch is normally near to the piston. Yours, whith what appears to be a perfectly straight rod, and still whith the bearing in place, looks like end caps bolts failure. Either for mechanical failure, fatige, over-torque... or over speed of the piston. But, Again, From only a picture is fairly difficult to say. I would sujjest a closer inspection to the bearings. They will be, of course damaged, but if it was an oil problem, I would expect to see some temperature colouring in the metal as it gets VERY hot just before gripping. Inspect also all the other bearings to find evidences of an oil pressure problem... I would expect to see "traces" of friction already. Good luck with it, and hopefully you find a new unit promptly, but is important to understand what has happened. Hope this information is handy when the time comes...

  28. Good luck at the dyno, I bet you’ve triple checked everything after reading all this! Good idea with the labelling!

  29. No worries, knew you weren't far away I've got mine on the dyno today, if that goes OK then I should be able to spare an afternoon in the coming weeks, if I end up in the same boat as you then maybe not Missed shifts won't be related, unless it's really bad and put swarf into the engine. Personally I prefer getting rid of as many 'fiddly' electronics as possible but I'm told the quickshifters can be made to work reliably. A note which I'm sure you were aware of, but I'll add for the sake of future searchers - oil level on these needs to be significantly over the full mark on the dipstick, and taken without it screwed in. The min and max markers can be ignored, and oil level filled to where the round stick transitions to the flat portion, approx 300-400ml overfill: I'll let you know about how today goes and if / when I can lend a hand First step is to get a label printer and label up the loom before you take all the connectors off!

  30. Engine out is pretty easy, much more so than a 'normal' car. Have a crane you can borrow from near Chorley if any use Perhaps a call to Andy Bates will be a good idea, try and work out what's happened, but my guess is oil related. Were you on full chat when it went? What was oil level like at the start of the day?
