  4. Just as an example I currently run 15's granted they have a very good 1B tyre but was quicker than all the class C boys on 13's and 1c tyres on sunday. So Dave is right the bod behind the wheel make up a lot of a package. But seat time is key. That's what I have learned in my small amount of sprinting 7 events 2 track days.

  5. Westfield SEIW Mazda SDV 1600 Turbo Well the time has come for me to part ways with my mazda derived westfield. I'm only selling it as i need to free up the cash for something else. It was built and iva’d by me in 2016 and registered on an age related G Plate. Since then its covered just over 2000 miles some road some track. It so new it still hasn't had its 1st mot Standard ZK Body in white with detachable rear arches, Carbon fibre arch protectors Flat panel carbon fibre boot cover, Caged Full cage with sticker purchased from playskool last year GRP Black half doors passenger side has a crack in where i leaned on it Lifeline Wing Mirrors and wide angle centre mirror All Lights are LED except the headlights Dominator Headlights Front Mickmade Carbon Fiber Splitter Mickmade removable Carbon Fiber Sides (makes for easy access) Carbon NV CSR Style Carbon Fiber front cycle wings Team dynamics pro race 1.2 15 inch wheels with toyo r888r tyres with plenty of life left in them JK Composite seats with white trim Schroth 4 point 3 inch Harnesses ETB Digidash Lite Dashboard CArbon Nv Carbon fiber Flat dash Stack Mechanical Oil Pressure gauge OMP trecento suede steering wheel Freewheel 8 channel wireless kit Aerodnamix Carbon tunnel 1600cc Mazda MX5 Mk1 Engine fully rebuilt bottom end last winter with all new bearings and seals block honed and forged rods fitted Omex 600 ecu Jenvey Throttle bodies with playskool polycarbonate plenum Canton racing accusump with electronic valve Radtec radiator/ intercooler package Mocal 13row oil cooler with thermostat Standard mazda sump with gated baffles 5 speed mazda gearbox, 1.8 shortened propshaft Ashcroft ATB LSD 4.1 ratio virtually brand new Mx5 uprights and brakes all the way around 1.6 smaller and lighter than the 1.8 Alloy Racing fabs header tank Odyssey p680 battery Protech Shocks all the way around Long range fuel tank Westfield chassis and engine loom which still has all the connections there for full windscreen wipers and heater if you need The car is currently running 184Bhp at 8-10psi and is correctly mapped for this, with a rolling road session this could safley be increased to 14psi to see around 220Bhp maybe more. There are a few marks here and there but nothing major Its had a geo setup at Clear Motorsport last year which completely transformed the car. Its equally happy on the road as it is on the track so can be used for both. I feel is worth £13500 but I am willing to listen to offers I've probably missed a few things off but I feel its alot of car for the money any questions get in touch

  9. Barney, at least 2 of those photos are taken by standing on top of the bank, near the control hut, above the start line. No reason why one of our chaps shouldn't stand up there with a decent telephoto lens. One at least seems to be taken from the marshalls' post by the Wiggler. The one which is taken of a red car going along a straight looks quite ''dodgey'' to me, unless taken with a very powerful lens it isn't where I would want to be standing.

  15. The weekend started off on Thursday evening when I dragged the caravan across to Blyton and Dave Cleaver dragged the Westy there as he was double driving with me for the weekend, we got set up and then said hello to the others that had arrived early and were going to be taking part in the track day on the Friday. Friday morning came and it was very overcast and word of rain at home only 40 miles away so prayed it stayed away for the day. The plan was for Dave to get some time in the car and use his experience to make any changes that he thought would make improvement. We let the normal track day first hour rush pass then Dave headed out, three laps later he returned and I thought something was wrong “It’s fine we don’t need to change anything” so that was that, a few runs on track throughout the day to get our eye in for Saturday which was also being run on the outer layout and that was that a great day and a little more confidence into some of the areas of the track that I hadn’t previously had the confidence to attack. Friday night most of the other SS competitors arrived and we managed to sign on and get scrutineered so less of a rush on the Saturday morning. Saturday and the outer circuit, we set the tyre pressures and applied the sun cream, it was going to be hot. A very straight forward morning practice runs with Dave a second quicker than me, although I had already beat my PB by 2 seconds. We had lunch then set about trying to find a little more time. I went a little faster with a 71.1 so set about trying to get in the 70’s while Dave was on 70.3 aiming to get a sub 70 second time. The last run of the day and Dave did it 69.8, I over drove the car and in true spin to win fashion I came over the finish backwards. So Dave to the honors but showed me what the car was capable of once I had more seat time. On the Saturday evening at prize giving we were notified that the local farmer had ploughed through the main water pipe for the site and therefore there was no water on site at all. So we did what and good speed series competitor would do and cracked open a few cold one’s, we had earned it by having our over sized baby grows on all day. The water was fixed about 8pm and we could start using the showers. A great BBQ where you bring your own food was in full swing with a mix of Marshall's non speed series club members and the speed series competitors all together. Sunday and the more technical of the days using the eastern circuit. Again we got the car ready and applied the sun cream it was going to be even hotter today. We had P1 and everything was fine Dave then came in from P2 and said one of the rears was binding and under breaking pulling to the left. After investigation we had lost a pin to the hand break rod on the back axle meaning the tension had been taken up on the opposite side. We disconnected the other side as well and cable tied the full assembly up out the way. So a job to do before my next run out. It got hotter through the day and we though the track had past its best. Dave managed to put a 75.47 only 1 tenth of the class record I was currently down in the 77.3 area but still pleased to be 4 second faster than my previous best. Last run of the day and Dave was on a flyer coming down towards the last corner with what looked to be a very quick time but couldn’t get the car slowed down enough and went straight on and through the kitty litter and onto the grass. I lined up knowing that I could go quicker but would be happy to get in the 66’s. bang off the line 64ft of 2.35 and nailed the first technical section and was 1.3 second up in the first sector, I was then brave round curva Grande and managed to get the car turned into the wiggler 2nd,3rd,4th into bishops where I had been scrubbing some speed but carrying 4th through that corner all weekend and a down shift to 3rd and powered out of the corner down and round bunga bunga and flat to the finish managed to get the car slowed and turned in………….75.40......... 1.9 seconds quicker in one run and first in class by 7 one hundredths and only 3 one hundredths off the record. Great weekend great company. Special thanks to the @John Williams - WSCC Competition Secretary and his organisation team and thanks to @tkm_dave as without someone telling me that the car is setup well and then showing me what it was capable of I would never have pushed as hard as I did to make up the time. on the Outer I went 4 seconds faster than my PB and eastern I was 6 seconds faster than my PB of only 6 weeks ago at the longton event. Let’s do it all again next year.

  16. I don't know how Blyton does it, but having been massively into circuit photography a few years ago, some of those look like they need a, infield/trackside photography pass from the circuit, which are usually really tricky to get hold of, (on the big circuits, at least) without being an accredited photographer. i know Oulton Park wanted to see two (if I recall correctly, it might have been more) published photographs, with invoices for the same, plus a copy of your public liability, insurance certificate. You then had to attend a safety briefing day, similar sort of thing to what they run for trainee marshals, I suppose. However, many of the Sprint type tracks will allow, with permission from the event organiser, as well as the circuit etc. One or two amateur photographers to be "embedded" at marshals posts, as long as they're the "safe" type posts with concrete or Armco barriers, between them and the actual track. This does of course mean that you can't move while the track is live. But you could do one post in the AM and another in the PM..,

  18. Oh, and a slightly left field suggestion, but I don't know if your AiM dash has a gps/accelerometer based data logger built in, but if it doesn't, I think they're an option on many of the AiM units. Seriously consider adding it. You have a Can Bus or serial connection to your ecu, don't you, already? So you have TPS, rpm, speed etc. I found on track, when having so much to do at once, and so much information coming at you so quickly, it really helped to go back over the track map data log afterwards, comparing runs and seeing where the gains and losses were.

  19. I'd say yes to ARB, for the adjustability of set up they lend. And then tuition, tuition, tuition! Oh and seat time, getting to know your car. Also log EVERY DETAIL of the configuration and performances. But before getting too wrapped up in the whole wheel size and tyre type debate; I'll throw this out there. Have a look in the Boardroom archives, at just how well Ash Mason, (@Arm) did with his light but powerful car years ago, on 15" Super Leg's, and how many FTD's and records he used to hold, wiping the floor with a surprising number of semi slick shod cars! He did by being a superb driver, true. But also being meticulous in his set up, and his logging of how changes to the car affected performance etc. Im not trying to say things like wheels and tyres et al, don't matter. Just that the soft squidgy bit behind the wheel makes a far bifpgger difference! The other point I'd consider, is that while on the steep part of the learning curve, using more road based wheels and tyres will shift the "oh ****" moments down the speed ladder, and should mean that when it lets go, it's a bit more progressive as well.

  21. Car have to be half driveable too... I cant see a track westy in a sprint event being "competitive" with T1R, 15 and without any ARB to control the weight transfer... Seat time and tuition is a MUST, but a decent set of 13" sticky rubbers and AT LEAST a front adjustable ARB will make a difference, and the car will be slightly more in pace. Tyres are not so important for tuition, as you won't probably use your set of competition tyres for training purposes, but ARB should be IN before trying to understand the car's behavior. (just an opinion though)

  22. Strangely I felt instantly relaxed when I got on the gravel! I really must learn how to get in to 3rd gear on the brakes, think I messed it up more than 80% of the time! I miss my cheating paddles

  23. Lol, was just about to say seat time! A geo is a great place to start, but if you're going to spend money on wheels & tyres, wait until you've done that first. In all seriousness though, learning to drive the car as is, on the tyres it's on, and pushing yourself to the limit is the best way to learn. Do a season as is and start to learn where the cars limits are in terms of understeer/oversteer/mid-corner/exit etc and then you can decide what the right development step is for you and the car, not what everyone else says you should have (even if they turn out to be right - but instead of doing what you're told, you've learnt it for yourself). Sprinting is great for this as you're against the clock and can literally see/feel where the changes make a difference. Get booked in for some sessions with @AdamR (maybe even in his mx5 as we discussed - great way to learn car control!) and take it from there - just my tuppence worth.
