Welcome great looking car. 250 rpm idle is so low I surprised it ticks over at all. Should be 750 to 850 ish. Have you got any flat spots as it might be an air leak ? It could also be sticky or bent, throttle cable not returning to idle promptly ? Sorry - didn’t make myself clear - it’s idling at about 700rpm and it is quite lumpy - if I use a tiny bit of throttle, it runs very smoothly at about 900rpm I’ve also noticed it spits back through the TBs if I try to blip the throttle between gears I noticed one flat spot as I came home - I’ll check for air leaks with some carb cleaner i will definitely be having the map tweaked - originally done by Mikeanics in Congleton several years ago Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Like it I thought it was just a standard contoured dashboard Apparently, stuff will stay in the recess until about 70mph, after which it can “escape” EDIT - turns out its not a standard contoured dash after all and no amount of Googling has found anything that looks similar. So far, I’ve only been out in the car once, and it’s certainly an experience! Somewhat different to my 1,900kg diseasel automatic daily hack, and very quickly re-taught me how to drive a car! The only issue from my standpoint (and my older brother’s, presumably) is insurance. Currently I can drive it under my own policy, but obviously third party only, which is far from ideal. And my age (26, and my brother 29) is too young for OP’s current provider Ive started to look into some other insurers (I found the thread on this forum, and speak to some of those) but obviously going forward it’s a much better prospect to be fully above board, if I were unfortunate enough to bend something. Anyway, car talk - OP hasn’t updated for a few days, so I’ll steal his thunder - the rough idle was seemingly being caused by flooded spark plug recesses - new plugs and leads has almost completely fixed the running of the car, as the old units were apparently in very poor condition as a result of their extended swim. Secondly, after my 20ish mile hoon on a (annoyingly busy) B-road a couple of weeks back, I decided very quickly that a helmet was needed. National speed limit (and no higher, you understand) wind in the face is not my idea of fun. Hopefully OP keeps the thread updated with progress, and hopefully I can bug him enough to keep getting it out of the garage each weekend... (Incidentally, that was intended as an explanation, not any kind of subtle hint to muck around with insurance on your Dad’s car. - a school friend of mine did this once, with main driver incorrectly specified etc. I forget the exact scenario now, it’s over thirty years ago. But they did get caught out, not only was a wrecked Mini not paid put on, but both him and his Mum got refused insurance by the company and all the hassle that caused for a few years.) However, now that both of my sons have driven the car, we suddenly have plans for "sharing" it.... I don't really have too much of a problem with this, as long as the extra costs are covered AND the lads aren't driving it under their "drive any other car" feature of their own policies (as it will be third-party only) However, when I spoke with Classicline yesterday, it turns out there's a minimum age of 30 on the policy I can see that the answer will either to be to wait 11 months for renewal, or to take out a brand new policy that covers all three of us (pretty sure I don't get a refund from Classicline if I cancel, so that will seem like a waste of money) A lot will depend on how desperate the lads are to drive it..... djm Posted April 24, 2018 Share Posted April 24, 2018 Hi I just had a poke around on the Classicline website and they say that they have "forged close relationships with a specialised panel of insurers, securing a selection of high quality insurance products". So it might be worth asking them if you can transfer it to another policy - depends whether they want to lose your business or not! Worth a try.
