Came across this ad whilst passing the time any thoughts ,I think I have a MT 75 gearbox [forgive my ignorance  from a transit I was told ]

What do  those in the know think .My car has around 240 Bhp  from a 2 l  zetec and my first gear  doesn't last that long before I have to change up why ,would a gearbox like this enhance the performance and how ?

I don't normally bother with 1st on my MT75, and I've only got 135hp or so from an 1800.

Wow ,so if I can set off in second I've basically got a 4 speed box ,

That makes me think ,everyone I've met tells me the gearbox I have is bomb proof ,however if I can pull off in second and ignore first it begs the question is there a better option out there .

Or is the fact that it's bomb proof it's saving grace ,as second and third at the right revs are astounding .

this caught my eye due to the weight saving mainly as I know nothing about ratios .

Rx8 6 speed, pull off in 2nd and you have a 5 speed decent ratio box :t-up:

Other option is a BGH or similar 5 speed or a caterham 6 speed.

Quite a long thread on here few weeks ago talking about the RX8 box and fitment, should come up with the search function

Here is the other thread which includes a picture of an RX8 box next to an MT75.

External add section

The rx8 box is about 10kg heavier (estimate from memory of internet searches and how my back felt when I lifted them both up).

The ratios of 2, 3, 4 and 5 are nice and close, similar to an uprated type 9 but without the cost and can handle high power.

I have found conversation plates for most engines so I expect the RX8 to become a popular box.

News just in from the place trying to fit the RX8 to my 1996 Wide chassis... Nope! It doesn't fit. The turbo and alternator (a 1.6 ford ecoboost) foul the chasses and the gear leaver sit too far forward by about 2-3 inches so you would hit the dash. I should get some pictures later.

An expensive day as I will need to get a type 9, bellhousing and clutch :-(

Explain in simple terms Dave as I've said I'm not that knowledgable, it's been suggested I should look at a rebuilt type 9 box with a long 1st gear which I'm looking into .

Do you know what ratio your differential is? I'm just suggesting that it's possible that you might benefit from having a taller ratio.

The engine spins the trans and the trans then spins the differential and then the wheels spin. If you changed your 1st gear ratio it would be better and the rest of the gears of course would remain the same....and this could be a good thing.

If you change the rear diff ratio you will change all the gears in the trans effectively making them all taller. This too could be a good thing. It depends on what you want out of the car. It's certainly much easier to pull the rear diff and have the ring and pinion swapped out than it is to pull the engine so that you can pull the trans and then have the trans rebuilt.

It might be worth finding an online gear calculator that allows for all the variables to be input so you could see how the different options would change the way the car feels and drives.
