Defender td5 lack of power

not sure if anyone can help with this one but here goes ... the engine in my 2002 defender td5 went bang a while ago ,the wife had been driving it for a while and complained that the heater was not working ,turned out to be no water in the cooling system  after 3k for new replacement engine(used and guaranteed 40k miles)  and fitting. the landy did not have the same amount of pulling power on hills so it went back to the garage and they found the MAF sensor was dead so a new one fitted .But still down on power . The guy that done the engine said the sump has full of water and oil . could this have killed the CAT and if the CAT was knackered could this cause a back pressure and cause a lack in power ?

cheers Martin

But if the sump is full of water as well as oil  that is not good and suggests something more serious like a head gasket

Have they read the fault codes? Is it boosting properly?

Yeah its been hooked up to a fault code reader thats how they found the MAF sensor was not out putting

Beginning to ring bells now - my brother had this on his td5 disco. Think it was eventually something else. I'll have a word.

ive also fitted all new filters and replaced the injector loom and the main fuel pump is only a couple of years old so i think i can rule out these items .

Where did the TD5 come from? - the Defender version develops 122bhp whereas the Disco version is 136bhp.

Also, not sure if the early Disco TD5 (pre 2002) had a cat - I seem to remember mine didn't when I upgraded it to a sports s/steel system (and it certainly didn't have after I fitted that ! :)) - you don't need them for an MOT.

The TD5 also suffered from engine injector loom problems (with oil getting into the loom as it runs through the cam cover to get to the injectors). I'd firstly check your chassis and new engine code as LR upgraded the engine in early 2002 to solve these problems (do you still have access to your old engine?). I'd also check the exhaust gas recirculating (egr) valve as they can often get gummed up and you loose a lot of turbo pressure (not to mention a load of horrible oily slime in the inlet manifold).

Other than checking that the ecu mapping is correct for your engine model it's difficult to diagnose - the TD5 is a wonderful engine but one of the first L/R designed engines to start using fancy electronics. There are loads of good L/R specialist out there now who could check it out for you.

edited - just overlapped with your post re: loom etc :d

If you can get hold of a nanocom or similar there's loads of live values you can look at to help diagnose the issue

ive never checked the EGR but was thinking about a blanking valve for it also ive been looking at one of these dummy Cats as ive been told there is only a visual check for cat

You can just take the gubbins out of the EGR and blank off the connections. I bored out mine on my D2 so it looks standard.

Be better asking on any of the LR forums, so many options for upgrades.

I went for one of these kits http://www.alivetuning.com/product/td5-egr-bypass-kit-eu3/

I also had a full stainless exhaust (originally from TD5 / Alive Tuning but I don't think they make it anymore) - I also had the ecu remapped (hard coded before the replaceable chip I believe) - anyway, resulting output was up around 185bhp and went and sounded superb. Sold it to my next door neighbour and still love to see and hear it. One of the best cars I've had.

Back to the engine though - the early TD5's had a code of "10P..." whilst the later ones had "15P...." there's quit a few differences and the ecu's need reprogramming if you swap either way as the injectors are different (although it will run but not very efficiently)

Google is your best bet but something for starters .. http://forum.lro.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=49584
