  1. Great pictures Trevor, thank you. I thought it was going to be a goooood day and it was, after all FLAG GATE was born today. Julie forget her flag so Mr Warwickshire Area had to stand there and rub it in didn't he, and do you think everyone else joined in? it goes without saying really But first, we picked this Motley Crue up at Halfords, which Ali thinks is McDonalds, but actually is a Marks and Spencers cafe, confused???? it's allowed. Trevor, Martyn and Sue, Paul VX, Billy, Ali and Gail and us, making a 6 car convoy We got free entry into the Steam Party, parked in show position and put the singular flag up. We had a good look around at the steam engines, both in motion around the parade ring and the ones on stand. There were classic cars and a 90 year old Crossley Engine which was running as smooth as it's first day I had a route planned, but it seemed daft to go North, when most people were from the South, so we went to Fradley Junction on the canal instead. It must be hard work driving a VX because Paul looks like he is having an afternoon power nap. The eagle-eyed will be able to spot our cars in the background. We scattered off in various directions from here, but, there had been NO CAKE TODAY, so, on the way home we called in Willersley Castle for jammy tea cakes We just got home before it went dark.

  4. I cut the insert in the bonnet out,the one nearest the windscreen and put a grill over it. After a few discussions at the Lodge at our monthly meets the talk was does it actually push air back into the bonnet. I tied a piece of ribbon to the grill, with the windscreen on at about 40 mph and above it does push the ribbon down into the engine bay. With the aero screen on (AA composite) the ribbon does wave about above the bonnet,so I guess air must be coming out.

  5. Well, some soot was still on our faces when we got home! A great day of course!

  6. Hi, The height issue can be resolved by fitting a Caterham Sigma sump kit, the kit is made by Titan but they aren't allowed to sell it direct. If you are considering bike carbs, why not think about bike throttle bodies? DanST do a good kit for the Sigma and you can use the standard injectors. Gary

  7. Kev, your MegaJolt will run the Sigma just as happily as the Crossflow if you stick bike carbs on it.

  8. What a cool day you had. Bet you all stank like steam rollers smoke after the day.

  9. I said maybe, I dont know it they make a 4 speed to sigma bell housing. Also, I dont know if the cast bell housing separates from the box ? If you go bike carbs are you thinking throttle bodies ? If so, you then enter the realms of additional fuel lines, swirl tanks wiring mods. As for ECU's , I cant recommend enough on speaking to Emerald about there system. My last car had it fitted and was brilliant. They will upload a data file for the engine as a get you running too, which saves a lot of time.

  10. You could consider the Schroth adjustable belt system where you can put the adjusters where ever you want. They are a bit pricy but you get what you pay for. This give you the idea

  11. No, pull up is the problem in certain specific cases! To be fair, it is easier to tighten them, if they suit your car/seat/body shape. If they don’t, then they’re the work of Satan. Once in the car, and sat down strapped in etc, they’re usually ok, though if you get the lower part of the strap “wrong”, the adjuster buckles wedge between your hips and the tunnel/outside panel of the car, bring the adjusters further up, by having longer lower straps, and this is avoided, plus they don’t trap between the sides of the car and your hips while getting in and out. BUT, because the fixed length is so long, there is now very little adjustable length left, fine for the driver that the belt length and seat position is designed around, but as said previously, no good if someone of the opposite stature is going to drive the car. Because of where the buckles sit, If great care is not taken getting in and out of the car, and they slip down, if there’s any sort of edge to them they will cut into the vinyl trim of the car. This is part of the damage done to my car in one trip to Stoneleigh, with the pull up lower belt buckles. This is with extended lower straps, capable of hanging on top of the tunnel and outside the car. the strap pulled down while getting in and gouged the tear in the seat. I had to have it recovered. You can just about make out some of the tears and scuffs in the side panel trim and arm rest here. Note, the second photo is with the Schroth harnesses I fitted in place of the originals. Note. There was NOTHING wrong with the original harnesses, and on someone slimmer than me, or with different seats they’d be fine. But for me, I was having exactly the problem you mention in your first post, and as said, it just got worse. So I suspect you’d be in the same boat as me, and simply wouldn’t get on with pull up lap belts.

  12. Remember the sigma works the other way round, so the exhaust is on the drivers side. If you stick to the webers off the crossflow, a basic list is ........ Exhaust manifold Sump Inlet manifold ECU and rolling road mapping Flywheel and potential clutch bits ( maybe hydraulic ?) Engine mounts Bellhousing if you have a type 9 box or if 4 speed, might need to convert to 5 speed ? Hoses for rad er................. probably other things, I cant think of currently.

  13. Always worth ditching a standard 2l zetec flywheel as fast as humanly possible- all they bring in a lightweight car is negative- worse acceleration, worse launch, worse gear shift. The car will feel much more lively with any version of lightened flywheel, and will also accelerate noticeably faster in first gear, at least. @DE04* recently swapped his, I can't remember which flywheel he picked, but is happy with the results

  14. Having had an ultralight flywheel (around 2kg without ring gear), though still with a standard “size” clutch, (as opposed to small lightweight type), on a highly tuned XE, also lumpy cams, high compression etc. Was that it was critical on the mapping, but provided the mapping was good at the idle/low revs/low throttle opening end of the scale, it was perfectly drivable in traffic etc. (One proviso, though, with a very long first gear driving at very slow speeds in traffic jams, manoeuvring between parked cars etc, required a delicate touch, and a bit of deft footwork with clutch and accelerator). If the mapping and physical set up of the throttle bodies at idle speed isn’t great, however, the engines can loose revs so fast if you lift off completely, that they just keep dropping past the nominal idle speed, and it’s almost like the ecu doesn’t quite stop them in time and stabilise the engine rpm quickly enough, and they just stall. Yet once at idle will run perfectly happily, if a little lumpily. Get the setup (airflow at idle) and mapping right and all is fine! A slightly heavier, circa 4 kg flywheel, I guess would avoid some of the pickiness. For the way it makes the engine feel, deffinately something I’d recommend.

  16. Agree. If I ever feel the need it is on the cards. But to be honest I'm perfectly happy with my piddly 183bhp and 175ftlb. For now ...

  18. It happened without fanfare, but @Mark (smokey mow) has retired as Joint AO for the Essex Area. By the time I joined the clan, Mark was busy with various projects that took up enough time to limit his appearances at meets, so our paths haven't crossed that often. However, on the occasions I have met him, he has always been interesting and engaging company. When I was looking for some help with information on the mighty crossflow, Mark was front and centre with exactly what I needed. He certainly "knows his stuff" when it comes to all things Westfield, reflected in the quality and detail when he responds to various questions on the Forum. Mark assures me he will continue to meet up with us as and when he can. I am sure that there are members of longer standing than me that would like to take the opportunity to thank Mark for his input and effort during his tenure. Thanks Mark.
