Brake Disks And Pads - What Are They And Can I Change Them?

I have a 2004 SeiW. It has HiSpec 4 pot calipers on the front and plain disks. The pads are Mintex 1144 and the pattern M16 I think. Can I just get them from Rally Design? What are the disks likely to be?

On the back there are plain disks and 'Sierra' calipers. Again your advice please on disk type and pads - I think the latter are just cheapies.

I'm probably going to take the pads to my local QuickFit who seem quite good and get them to change them and the fluid too. The menu pricing seems quite attractive compared to the fuss and bother I might have with some critical components.

Or can I do the pads myself?? Not sure about wind-back tools which I dont have.

Again your advice would be appreciated.

Do it all yourself. Straight forward. Discs are Cortina. form memory, which wasn't that long ago actuall, disc diameter is 247.5mm, thickness 12.8mm, overall height something like 26mm. I have a pair of solid ones if you want them. Looking for around £30. If you want cross drilled and grooved RD them. I bought mine off Ebay, here, very quick and good comms when I was checking the dims out.

Regarding the pistons I managed to push them back without any tools.

Rally design, Maerlin, Deamon etal all will sell a Mintex 1144 pad to fit a ford Sierra M16 caliper. I think the mintex part number is MGB633-1144 or 1155 for a harder one.

Hi Spec do have a few 4 pots though, and the more common are the Billet 4 which uses an M16 mount but is bigger than the M16, this uses a pad 100mmx50mmx16mm, Mintex part number MDB 2581-1144. this has two pins holding it.

The Hi Spec Ultralight 4 is a direct M16 replacment, so uses the MGB633 pad.

If unsure remove the pads, measure them and ask on here.

The rear caliper is likely to be Sierra 1.6/1.8/2.0/2.8L ABS modle from 87 onwards. I would just get the cheap regular pads for these from any Motorfactors, they do not do a great deal so no need to spend a fortune here.

Removing the front pads should be a case of uncliping the R clip and removing the pins and then sliding the calipers and anti rattle springs out. Gently prise the pistons back in and then add the new pads and springs and pins and R clips. Yes rear needs a wind back tool, but is not a big purchase/easy to borrow.

Depends one the version Of Hi Spec front calliper fitted, but I was under the impression that most, (like mine) used on Westfields take Lotus Elise pads. The M16 fitment is just the callipers mounting point/bracket arrangement.

In which case, the pads are secured in by two steel pins, each pin is in turn. Secured in place by a small R Clip. Pull the R clips ff, slide the ins out and the pads should slide backwards out of the caliper.

Then just undo the two bolts to remove the caliper.

Be aware that the Hi Specs with new pads and new disks can be a tight fit together.

Also, there may be shims under the callipers mounting lugs. They may look like washers, but they're there to centralise the calliper, (if there at all)

Same here. In fact I bought my current pads from an Elise specialist.

The fitment is also the same as Impreza WRX STI rear brakes from 2001 onwards (which incidentally were the cheapest Mintex 1144s I could find, their model number is MDB1890 if that helps at all).

My wind-back tool = a G clamp ;) (obviously this is not suitable for rear calipers though!).

I've got the Hi spec Ultralite calipers all round ( 4 pot front ) One of the posts above mentions 247mm diameter front disks, when i bought my calipers, Westfield told me thats normal size(Cortina disks), but for the Ultralite calipers i needed 245mm OD disks as they clear the caliper properly - i just got them from Westfield to ensure they fitted - Item code from Westfield was 2331154, £36.99+ vat for the pair.

Pagid disks - £19.5 each on there but they have 30% off at the moment with a promotion code on the front page, making them £13.65 each INC vat and they do free delivery.

They do Sierra Pagid rear pad sets for about £20 less the 30% but i dont know which is right - you'd have to have a look. It would be much better quality (pagid are very good) and MUCH cheaper than going to Kwik fit who would probably supply low quality parts for double the price.

Don't know what general opinion is, but I've used "Green Stuff" and I really do get on with them. This is in my everyday cars, they're really not expensive, and what you save doing it yourself would more than cover the difference.

Green Stuff sometimes get a bit of a hard time on here but when I used them, I liked them. These days on the road car I use Ferodo DS2500 up front and... er... something else in the rears :blush:

That said, I'm "upgrading" the brakes on the road car right now and for the fronts I'm torn between Green Stuff, 1144's and the aforementioned DS2500's for shoving in the Westfield logo'd Bremsport/Outlaw M16 caliper...

Just be aware if you've got a Westfield for road use registered after April 1st 2001 that pads need to be R90 compliant; AFAIK, Mintex 1144 are, but Ferodo DS2500, 3000 etc aren't.

As ever, chances of being an issue are slim, but you accept you're own risks etc. the daft thing is, as I understand it, the regulation was brought in to counter cheap low quality brake pads and shoes, (the sort of thing probably now sold as fakes anyway). Yet by insisting the performance should closely match the original friction material, it's also caught up some of the higher performance semi-road/track pads.

Good to know. Both my cars are thankfully pre- SVA, so I can do what I want... and often do :o

And yet another legislative requirement that failed to take into account the unexpected / unintended consequences.

May I jump in on this thread and ask a question...?

i know this question's been asked before.... but is it really true that the 4 pot calipers (ohter than the ap ones) dont really give more braking performance than the standard m16 calipers? (but save weight I know).

I fancy a brake upgrade, but dont want to fit brake bias etc etc... a simple disc/caliper swap would be the way for me...

can I assume then that wilwood and hispec would be the only options???

what size discs would be recommended for 15" wheels? Grooved and drilled? and which make/model of caliper would you recommend?
