decent surround sound system for telly?

currently have a panasonic 42" plasma on a stand running a multi dvd player panasonic home theatre saht70  had it 4 years now and still sounds the dogs danglies compared to other peoples more expensive systems.. the   Bass is very strong.. also have noticed the bass sounds much stronger  if I put the sub  across the corner the corner rather than flat against the wall. ?

anyway getting our living room redone in the next couple of weeks One of the things we are getting done is the 90degree corner of the room is getting a frame made and  boarded top to bottom like a triangle to mount the plasma on the wall and going to build in some shelves into it for the sat box and dvd recorder etc..

as everything is going to be built in and I need to construct a frame  what would be the best place to mount the sub ? would it be better mounted at the back as I have it now  and box under the screen making a box  and let the sound come out through the front  or set it into the newly constructed wall and leave it flush at the front ? see very basic diagram      :p

also other than spending a fortune whats better than the surround system  I have at the mo ?

TIA  :t-up:

I waited until I could get my telly into the middle of the wall before I invested in a surround system, I just didn't see how you could get the proper speaker positioning in a room with the TV in a corner.

My system supports 7.1, but it's only wired for 6.1 because I could see where I would get the two side speakers in given our room layout. We have two either side of the TV, with a center in the middle of the telly. Then there are three along the back wall (about the same distance behind the viewing position as the TV is in front of it). The sub just sits in the corner.

Positioning of the sub will depend to an extent on where it outputs. If the sound comes from one of the sides, then you don't (I think) want that side close to anything otherwise you get reflections. As I said earlier, mine outputs from the bottom so it doesn't really matter that it's shoved in the corner.

N.B. I am not an audiophile, so take my comments with a pinch of salt :)

Jeff I have just upraded to the Bose Acoustimass a speaker either side of the plasma, center above and the rears on the side at the rear I haveput the sub behind the sofa works well.

I would put the sub behind rather than sticking out the front.

is bose as expensive as it sounds ? ? some of the audis have it as un upgrade and its a bl**dy  fortune.. what do you have powering your speakers then ?

oh and I must have a 5.1 set up if Ive read that right.  ;)  :D

5.1 and 7.1 is referring to how many channels the original sound was recorded in - and as such can be replayed back in those channels if your system decodes it..

best place for a sub is behind the sofa.. the seats rock!!!!!!!!

try to get as many speakers mounted at head height when sitting whee you want to be and think of positioning them all to aim for you really.

one point i would watch for when building in - make it easy to get at!! and think of heat - let a gap in one of the shelves at the top to let out heat... hot air rises... etc...

also good tip try to keep cables to speakers away as much as you can from mains power cables or uses sheilded cable

I'd be careful putting the sub so it vents into the back of your built in corner, because it may do odd things to the bass levels like magnify it hugely and make it horribly boomy. For similar reasons I don't think its good practice to vent a sub port tight up against a wall unless its designed for that, and as bass is not really directional (ie you don't hear bass coming from a particular direction), I'd put it behind the sofa or alongside a a bit of lounge furniture, it doesnt need to be directly in front of you or near the TV.

With the Bose system, you can put the sub virtually anywhere (I have an Acoustimass system in the bedroom, with the sub under the bed), as it works in a slightly different way to a traditional sub.

With a traditional sub, the best place to locate it where it sounds best. Sounds daft, but it's really something you need to test in your room, and what suits your ears.

As ChrisG said, the sub needs to be in relatively free space - you said it has reflex ports to the rear, so do not put it tight against anything. Ideally you shouldn't be able to identify where the sub is, as the bass frequencies are less directional than higher frequencies.

My system in the living room, is setup basically as per Barrys diagram - my sub has approx 20cm air space all around it though, and I can just tell where it is positioned by ear.

Obviously you ultimately have to put it somewhere vaguely convenient, and that appeases SWMBO  :D  Life is full of compromises...

Edited to add: the Bose system makes a great noise for its size and convenience, but Bose seems to be a bit like Marmite - you either love it or hate it.

Jeff

Do not put the sub near the TV.

I know people say that Bass is not directional & it doesnt matter where you put the sub in a room.  Technically true, but i tried it & i prefer the sub at least 6 feet away from the TV.

What amp & speakers do you have?

are you happy with them or are you upgrading?

its all the panasonic system, which when I bought it years ago got cracking reviews, Its still very good now, bass will shake the couch 12ft away!!  but things move on hence thinking of upgrading..

What sort of cost would a bosa set up be 5.1 and do they do amps etc ?

My speakers system cost £799 plus £20 each for the 5 wall mounts I had a deal at £825 for the lot off a Bristol hi/fi specialist.

There not sold everywhere

Check out bose's website for your local dealer see if they have a demo room
