Timber sizes

I'm want to insulate the side wall of the garage which is only a single block wall. My plan was to use 2x2 timber and fill with 50mm celotex insulation boards.

The problem is I can't seem to find 2"x2" timber or even 50mm x 50mm all I can find is 47mm x 47mm which would mean spacing the studwork of the wall. Would I need to then fill the gaps with expanding foam or just leave a gap. I was also planning on putting a plastic membrane against the wall first to stop any damp coming through.

Any ideas..?

The normal procedure is to leave a 25-50mm gap between the frame and the masobry walls. This creates a ventilated cavity that helps to reduce the build up of condensation within the frame.

Do not install a polythene membrane against the wall. As above, this will create issues with condensation due to sweating. Use a breather membrane (tyvek etc) as this alows the moisture from within the building to permeate through the building fabric whist also stopping any mositure from the outside getting in.

Have alook at the celotex website in the technical section. They have some good examples for insulating typical construction types.

Cheers guy's so if I could get a 2x3 timber that would give me the 25mm minimum air gap. Good point about the plastic not breathing. I would have used a 4x2 but I'm trying not to eat into the internal space of the garage to much

Any timber merchant will supply sawn timber to whatever dimensions you require .

If you dont require PAR (planed all round ) just ask for 3x2 sawn , its cheaper and no point in wasting money on something you wont see .

There doesn't seem to be standard sizes for timber since they went metric, so if Wickes are a bit out try B&Q and then........

And that celotex is expensive

Yeah the celotex is about £23 for a 8x4 sheet 2" thick I was wondering if rockwool would be OK

Celotex and other PUR type insulations are approximately 3x better than the same thickness of mineral wool.

I got a load of rock wool dirt cheap off Gumtree. 100mm for the walls and 150 above the ceiling. Cost 50 quid for the lot. Then the rolls I had left I got 20 quid back for!

We've not had it too cold yet but half an hour with the heater on and the place stays warm all day.

that's a better price as my garage is 24' long

You prolly need 14 sheets or more , I would measure up and ask for quotes , could maybe get you some extra discount on £300 quids worth  :t-up:

Yeah I know it's not going to be cheap but it will be worth it. Was thinking about putting shuttering ply on the studwork first before the plaster board so I won't have any issues getting fixings for shelfs etc
