Which steering wheel

Recommended Posts

Feel like I am clogging the system up with "which is best" questions!

While the Westy is still off the road, I'm going to get my column out and off to Luke this week to weld up a Rapfix QR boss.

That means I also need a new steering wheel.

Recommendations for wheels that fit this system would be appreciated, circa 280mm diameter.

What might need to be considered is that I want to fit buttons for indicators and main beam/flash, using Mike's wonderful freewheel technology.

The Momo Team is a lovely wheel.

Don't forget you may need an adapter to fit the steering wheel to the rapfix.

Thanks Geoff.

What would an adapter look like? I can imagine that its to convert from the drillings on the boss to the hole layout on the wheel. But does it space the wheel off the boss at all, as that would impact on what I tell Luke in terms of adapting the column when welding.

There are some flat plate three to six hole adaptors, I would guess 5mm thick, give or take a couple of mm, from the photos I've seen.

Ha, would you believe it, can't find a photo now of the thinner one I'd seen, just the thicker ones, more like a spacer. (Well, I did find one photo of one, it was a Works Bell model, didn't seem right putting a link up, given that it was to someone else's web shop - Ask Luke if he has any/can get any, I'm sure he used to be able to).

It's such a personal choice a steering wheel. I started off with the basic factory IVA wheel, but soon changed to a nice suede D shaped one. Although I really liked the D shape in terms of the feel and also the aesthetics, I found that the wheel spoke shape obscured the idiot lights along the bottom of my Dash2. To overcome this I splashed out on a nice momo.

I too use a PCD adapter plate, it's about 10mm deep and was very good value.

I have just had my car in to Luke's workshop for a full set up - I also got him to fit a Rapifix Quick Release Boss and a Momo 27 (290mm) steering wheel. I am extremely pleased with the steering wheel - and I have a much better view of the instruments and more room for my legs.

I asked Luke to size the steering column so that it was exactly the same distance from the dashboard as the old Westfield wheel one and he did exactly that.

Slightly off topic but who is Luke and what's his outfit like as I'm thinking of swapping my wheel shortly.

Luke is Playskool, as advertised on here.

Great products. Probably too busy, so you have to persevere when trying to get hold of him. Very helpful and always gets there in the end.

Although I have moaned on occasions about communication, I would have no hesitation in recommending hi services!

I've got the Momo Team wheel in 280mm - lovely.

One decision you need to make is leather or suede, unless you always wear gloves the suede ones can go very shinny very quickly, where as my leather wheel has had three road trips with all the dust/weather/grubby hands that that can throw at it and still looks as good as new.

Also most aftermarket steering wheels come with the smaller PCD (or PDC?) of 75mm which matches with most of the releasable bosses. And Chairman made a usual suggestion of making cardboard version to check the size is good.

Good luck
