Aldi have a 2000w inveter generator at £270.

Wondered if anyone had an experience of it?

Hi Kevin, Did you take a punt on the generator? I bought a set of combination ratchet scanners, 5 sizes for £9.99 and they are brilliant!

I didn't Gary, mainly because I've been busy squaring up work before going on holiday tomorrow.

I bought the ratchet spanners when they were around last year and you're right, they are brilliant!

Guy at work bought one of these. Says it's a Honda copy and is very quiet. He pleased with his purchase. Wonder if they will have them again?

  • 3 weeks later...

Back from my hols and the Colchester branch opposite my office had 8 left (2 stores local to home had sold out).

Even better, the price had dropped to £249.99, so I had one.

Will run it up at the weekend, but looks a decent piece of kit with a 5 year warranty and £780 less than the Honda equivalent.

What is specifically different about an "inverter" generator compared with others? ???

As far as I can tell, it creates a DC current first and then converts (or I guess inverts) it into a clean AC supply.

How does the inverter work?

Honda 's inverter technology takes the raw power produced by the generator and uses a special microprocessor to condition it through a multi-step process.

First, the generator's alternator produces high voltage multiphase AC power. The AC power is then converted to DC. Finally the DC power is converted back to AC by the inverter. The inverter also smoothes and cleans the power to make it high quality. A special microprocessor controls the entire process, as well as the speed of the engine.

Honda uses only high quality inverters in our generators, which produce stable, consistent power.

The end result? Clean enough power to run even the most sensitive electronic equipment.

I bought one of Honda's smaller models years ago (EU10i) and it cost me £600 then !! (though I've used it many times when away in the caravan with no problems but it's not really suited to any power tools as it's only rated at 900w constant - fine for tv and laptops etc)

The Aldi one looks a bargain (though note that it's rated at 1600w constant but that should be fine for most power tools). Their "Workzone" branded stuff is good quality and they're guarantees are good, so if I were looking for a generator I'd definitely go for one of these (I've also noted that most of their more expensive offers will get a price cut if you can take the chance on holding on - I guess it depends on how many stores you have in the area to go and check stock levels  ??? )
