Sprint Tyres - 2016 Regs - now dust has settled

Hi. I am new to this forum having purchased my first Westfield just yesterday.

 

I have rallied for a number of years, and this car is going to be my first step into Sprinting (as a more accessible sport with a young family).

 

The car has come with A048's which are now in the MSA List 1C which we know are no longer allowed in Roadgoing Specialist Production class (this is the class I plan to compete in).

 

Now that the dust has settled on the new regs, does there seem to be a tyre of choice in either 1A or 1B for 13" rims please?

 

Apologies if this has been covered, I have searched the forum pretty thoroughly and there doesn't seem to be anything relevant since the 2016 season started. 

 

Couple of other questions:

 

If I was to run in Modified Specialist Production Cars, then I believe (from reading he blue book) that tyres are pretty open and that slicks then become and option? I understand the 048's would not be great for sprinting as they dont warm up straight away.

 

Anything I need to be aware of running in Roadgoing Specialist with a Westfield?

 

Spec is loosely:

 

1.6 4AGE on 45's

5 speed type 9 straight cut

LSD

aero screen

mot/tax/insured

 

Anything that could catch me out in this class?

I don't think the dust has settled, there's likely to be more changes for next year.

In terms of your car, sounds like a great spec for sprinting! Best to download a copy of the 2016 MSA Yearbook (which I'm sure you'll be familiar with from rallying) to make sure you're ok - main concern will be your roll bar/cage. If in any doubt, post up some pics and we can advise.

Ref the tyres you have, yes a048 are a list 1c tyre so would put you in mod-prod, they're an ok tyre but depends on the compound you have. I personally wouldn't run a medium compound of that tyre from experience on a few cars (classic minis to aerial atoms!) They do take a while to warm up. In mod-prod you will be against slick shod cars which tend to run a super-soft compound.

The current crop of cars running 1b tyres tend to be the r888 in sg, r888r or Avon ZZS. All look close on times.

Be careful what you buy as some of the ones mentioned like Avon ZZS may also be banned next year.

We are allowing 1C tyres in some of our speed series classes this year but on the day you would run in mod prods against slick shod cars etc and would need a Helmet with Hans posts and a Hans Device

You also need to check that your Roll over bar or cage is compliant with 2016 rules

 

You will enjoy sprinting and it would be useful for you to go to an event and look at a few cars and talk to drivers

Our weekend at Blyton will see the lost cars there and of veering classes, engines and tyres so get to it if you can. You could even help marshall on start line for experience etc

Hi there, thanks for the response. I was looking at Blyton last night and will see if we can make it along. We have done a few sprints in the rally car but of course get put into one of the special classes.

 

If I was to run in mod-prod then hans is no issue as I have that setup already from rallying.

 

Here is a pic of the roll bar. It would seem to comply fully to K.1.6.1 - would you tend to agree?

 

 

 

 

Driven well, how do you think the spec of the car on slicks would fair against other mod-prod cars? I am imagining a few 240bhp+ xe cars...

They only seem to be available in a Medium, and therefore I assume this is what people sprinting have to use in terms of compound?

Rose joints definitely not acceptable in MSA sprints - many of us have had to upgrade for this years competition to MSA approved ROPs to compete in Roadgoing

Unfortunately that roll over hoop does not comply as others have confirmed above, it's the rose joints at the top that are the problem.

But don't let the complications put you off, it's amazing fun and the paddock support & banter is what makes it brilliant!

They are correct the rules changed this year and has seen a lot of competitor forced to change the roll bar. (I'm in the same boat)..

 

you can go the track day at Blyton without swapping the bar but for the speed series the bar would need to be swapped.

Unfortunately the car came with some very worn A048's which I cant run in my class (even if they had some tread) so I need to buy something.

 

I think I will go for the R880R and keep my fingers crossed these stay eligible next year. Dont seem to be able to find a 1a tyre that people rate...

Yes run a 1B tyre.

None of the 1As will come close , they will be at least a second or two slower on a track

I thought that list 1C was for non E marked treaded tyres and hence called racing tyres?

a set of year old or more A048s would be E marked therefore at the time or purchase be in list 1B?

Therefore would any E marked tyre not be acceptable in 1B?

 

 

What's more confusing is that the ZZR has 4 compounds. 2 compounds are List 1B and 2 compounds are list 1C
