Paul lester
Just wondering how easy is it to swap a xflow to a zetec engine I've got a full race xflow to a type 9 straight cut box it's quick but was thinking about a 2.o litre zetec but I've got a dry sump which is shallow in depth if I buy a brand new zetec I think it will fit the box just engine mounts to move is there any thing else I should know I've got a big radiator apart from the 45 decos to fit is it worth it my box is 4 speed so may be worth going for a 5 speed my box has a long 1st gear ie 55mph easy in first. Just wondering whether to swap it
Pistol Pete
Welcome, do you know which 4 speed box you have? Could be a type 3 or Type E. Type E is the stronger version and what the Type 9 is based on so apart from the mount its a straight swap. If not and you have Type 3 then you you will need bell housing , clutch centre and new cra & crb. Also standard ratios are not really any good for a light weight kit car, personally I would stick to the long first. Re engine swap, you will need to factor in the following: Sump - as you say Ignition - ecu ignition only? Exhaust inlet manifold Water rail - little bit of research required Swaps generally come in at £2k and the engine isn't the expsensive bit. If you take your take and collect bits second hand on here and locost you can probably do it a little cheaper. Good luck.
Greggs
As Pete says above the engine is the cheap bit its all the other bits and bobs that add up. mine cost around 2.5k to swap... But the crossflow will be worth a fair bit if you sell that. My crossflow fetched 350 quid and it was pretty standard. Greggs...
Mighty Mart
Hi Paul, If you have a pretty full on specced x flow, just how much more are you expecting from a Zetec out of interest? Just laying devils advocate really, but a Zetec may not be a big enough jump from a good x flow to warrant the expense? What about mating the current motor to a five speed with the longer 1st gear and retain the raw experience of retro versus modern technology? Either way good luck and enjoy! Mart. Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman
Lots of good points made so far. First thing is usually to get clear in your own mind why you want to swap and what you want to achieve. (By the way, "'cause you want to" is an acceptable answer! There's no problem with doing these things just 'cause you want a project that takes your fancy, as long as you're aware of that and factor it in accordingly. Otherwise if it's for "better performance", then you start making things a wee bit more complicated. A race tuned x-flow and a standard or relatively standard Zetec are going to have a very different feel and character. And a very different rev range, which then affects transmission choices. (I'm making the big assumption that a dry sumped, race tuned x-flow is all steel internally, admittedly).
