Westfield Rotary Engine

Just spotted in this months CKC mag....

I feel justified in posting the picture, as they've used an old photo of my Mega S2000 (probably from when they tested it) in their article..

Hi Craig,

I suspect they more likely just used a library picture of your car to support the article! I'm sure WSC will put up some pics of their Rotary prototype at some point and I expect the chassis will be radically lighter than the one used for the S2000.

Best regards,

Ian

Chris Marries a former Mazda LeMan team engineer, built a westfield with rotary and capaigned it quite sucesfully in the early noughties. Biggest issue was the noise

Having had an rx8 in the past I would love a rotary engine in my Westfield.

The linear power delivery would suit the Westfield perfectly in my opinion.

at the open day that engine was on a stand upon talking to the people there i was lead to believe that it would be in a car by march this year the cool thing about them is they can be strapped together. they are really small in comparison to normal engines the biger one on the left was the more powerful of the 3 engines. i heard that westfeild will be attending autosport this year aswell as the company that makes these engines and will have something new to show off maybe it will be this in a car

I think it will be the Ecoboost that are working on now. But you never know!

I remember seeing Chris Maries rotary engine westfield many years ago - it blitzed everything in the WSC BARC series - when it passed noise tests and didn't set alight - awesome power unit

+1. Those of us who saw it will remember that noise was as big a problem as heat. I seem to recall a "double decker" silencer arrangement at one point, with the entire exhaust wrapped in heat wrap lest it melted the body

It was 'kin fast though...

Looks interesting, how far off or likely is it to make it into a car?

At a trackday last year (Abingdon I think) someone was already running a car with an RX8 engine in, can't think if it was a Westfield or some other 7 esc. It was quick but he said it was a pain to keep it cool.

Rotaries, as Mark and Blatters have said, are nothing new in Westfields, there are at least three I know of, though only two of those were definitely runners. (One was being built on here quite a few years ago, then all went quiet).

But those previous efforts were all Mazda based, with various generation RX7 or 8 motors, a big difference to what's planned with these.

Will they suffer the same noise issues? Is that the nature of rotaries, or was it peculiar to how Mazda had designed theirs?

It sounds like, on the smaller engines at least, it may not be such an issue, due to the applications the engines are currently used for.

An interesting development, certainly.

Owned a Mk1 RX-7 for years and loved that engine apart from its lack of torque. Spun up so smoothly! I recently thought a hybrid, rotary connected to an electric drive motor would be a good combo, free spinning with linear acceleration.

I signed Chris up for the NSSCC when I was the co ordinator, the noise issue took about £4k to fix, as said ended up with a double decker titanium silencer on the rear.

One of my customers Jonathan rebuilt an SEiW that was on our stand at Stoneleigh and was running an RX8 engine although that is a very tall unit and required us to make a taller V8 Style bonnet for it .

The car was previously run by Brian Stevens with an RX7 engine and was awesomely fast when running right , exhaust had to run from one side of the car across the front of the scuttle and back out to get the pipework the right length , previous to this was also run with a rotary by someone else I believe .
