windows thinks its 2061

my laptop recently broke. it was fixed under warranty by novotec where they replaced the motherboard. they did not need to reinstall windows 8 to do this which i find a bit strange.

it seems to be doing odd stuff. firstly i cant get it to connect to eduroam which is the university wireless but it does connect to the ASK4 network where im living at the moment?

also it kept asking to activate windows. it would not do this even when connected to the internet. but it did let me do it via a website that the 0800 microsoft number directed me to where i had to use a code made up of 9 7 digit numbers.

next thing is the date was set to 19/12/2091 and the time to 20:11 as i type this. i cant manually change the date to a date that is earlier than 2061. neither will it connect to the internet to do it automatically despite the internet being connected

final thing is it wont run win update at all just says there is an error when trying to do it.

any ideas? im thinking they can have it back and try again as it seems a bit screwed!

Windows update can be fussy about the date and time being correct. You probably need to fix the date first. Can you access the BIOS setup and correct the date there? Typically hit F10 or DEL as it boots, before it starts to load Windows. Bit weird it won't let you do it from control panel though. Might be worth resetting BIOS to defaults while you are there. Could be corrupted.

You had to reactivate Windows because they didn't reinstall. Windows 'hashes' the hardware and if too much changes, it decides you are trying to rip it off and demands activation. A new motherboard would certainly trigger it.

Or maybe just chuck it back at them, they clearly haven't done a very good job of the repair.

I agree with Chris if you want to faff around with it. If it was me, I'd send it back and tell them to FIX IT PROPERLY.

I'm willing to have a bit of a faf just because I need to use the laptop so I changed the time in the bios and it seems to be much happier. Things have updated avast doesn't seem to be blocking stuff and Firefox isn't saying everything needs a security exception too

Thanks for the suggestion

If I remember right, Eduroam allows access based on Mac address. Mac address is a unique ID number associated with the WiFi receiver on your motherboard. The connection information on the hard drive will still be OK, but eduroam won't let you connect as it doesn't recognise the motherboard anymore. You'll probably need to get in touch with the Uni IT department to fix this. The home network probably doesn't restrict access based on known hardware Mac address, so you are able to connect after the motherboard change. Universities only want known hardware connected to their network. Home networks are usually easier to allow house guests to connect. No idea on the date problem, but I'd look at the bios settings first, as suggested.

The activation thing is again probably due to windows not recognising the new hardware as being the same as when it is first installed and is a licencing thing to prevent people cloning windows on to new hardware. No idea how to fix this, bit you probably want to go back to the people who installed the new board to fix.

On windows8 open a command terminal and type ipconfig /all. The Mac address is called physical address.

When windows thought it was 2061, did you do a web search for Grand National winners over the past forty five years? Could have funded your Westfield upgrades for a long time. :)

lol either that jen or i will hold the record for the longest ever engine swap at 53yrs! the mac address is the same as before, the network where i am is stil part of the university as im in their halls but though a company called ASK4. i never had this laptop on eduroam so couldnt say it was working before.

Or spoof the MAC address of the old motherboard's ethernet and/or wifi adapter if they are available. Sometimes there is a sticker on the PC with it on, or ask the network admins if they have it. This can be done in Device Damager, via the Command Prompt, in the Registry or there are bits of freeware you can download and use.

I guess the slang word for homo-sexual is in the swear filter...

Was set to a loose match on the word, have set it to exact matches now, and added a variation or two manually.

Loving your work  :)

I need to ask you about Crestron, but I'll do it off line...
