Carbon cutting, drilling, sanding tools

Scottish Westy

Recommended Posts

Bit of a long shot but just wondering if anybody has completed their carbon upgrades and no longer requires their tooling before I buy my own, or does somebody in Central Belt Scotland have a set I could borrow in exchange for beer tokens?

Looking to cut sheet, drill 50 and 80 dia for dash instrumentation, 22 dia for savage switches and 4.1 dia hole for rivets, plus sand all edges

Thanks in advance

Graeme

I did some carbon cutting earlier in the year (never done any before) and although quite nervous about it (mainly due to the price of the stuff) - cover the CF with masking tape and layout your design - change it several times until you're happy then measure ten times and cut once . I ended up using ordinary metal working tools - good HSS ground cut drills worked fine, fine tooth hacksaw - even an electric jigsaw with a fine metal cutting blade.

For the larger dial and instrument holes (50 and 100mm in my case) I used one of these (after testing on a few offcuts) http://www.silverlinetools.com/en-GB/Products/Power%20Tool%20Accessories/Holesaws/447132    (any smaller odd ball sized holes I used stepped cutter drills).

I was surprised a) how easy CF is to cut/sand and b) how incredibly strong it is :)  - I'm pleased with my results and all the tools are still sharp enough to use again.

My top tip: when masking it up and drawing your design, think about which side is the side you want showing.

You wouldn't catch me ruining some nice CF like that!

When I was fitting my carbon fibre bonnet i bought some dremel parts from http://www.easycomposites.co.uk/ and they last 'forever'

I'm trying to work out how that tool you've mentioned tisme works? Looks cool and might be ideal for me at the moment. See how it 'drills in' but how is it adjustable in size? Can't see how those outer two parts would work...
