Just a question for my own curiosity really.

What's the benefits of wrapping exhaust pipes, retain heat? Protect body from heat? Vanity!

Ohhh contensious issue

I say yes it takes some of the heat out of the engine bay.

And if you have a tatty exhaust ( like me ) it covers up the rust....

Some say it redirects heat out of engine bay to outside, mine are done.

Some say it allows the exhaust valves to potentially overheat.

As above a bit contentious

Yeah, its normally about keeping the heat out of the engine bay, and or, off the plastic bodywork.

Well actually it's (normally) done to increase power due to the extra heat retained in the manifold and first stage of the exhaust  which aids the flow (out) of exhaust gases.

As above, it's contentious and only a few hp if any at all???  Some manifolds crack due to increased heat retention, some wraps look awful.....

Exhaust wrap can also be useful for covering clips on the exhaust outside of the car for IVA purposes.
