I have had my kit car in the garage for the past ten years untouched and unbuilt, due to the birth of my poorly daughter. I have now dug the car out and I am daunted to say the least. I have the 1800 Q kit, first of all the parts engine etc have sat garaged for 10 years is there any hope, do I just put it all together and go from there or is it worth getting someone who knows more than me which is nothing to have a look over it. Terry Everall Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 Thats opened a can of worms but good luck. After 10 years many parts will need freeing off and the engine may have struggled to survive. If you are hoping to put it on the road it will need to go through IVA and there is a lot of advice available on here It would be useful if someone locally could have a look at what y have and give advice about how to proceed. If its too difficult ( and to will be time consuming ) you could just sell ll the bits and buy a ready built car if that floats your boat Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Hopefully you'll continue with your build but you will need to find out the latest IVA requirements, as they have bound to have changed over the years. Some parts you have may not be compliant with IVA. If your garage is nice and dry the chances are the mechanical parts won't have seized up, they do however need checking manually and visually to see if they are useable. jeff oakley Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 Hi Michelle and welcome, nice to see a few ladies getting involved. In answer to your questions, it all depends on many things. First is where have you stored these bits, dry warm garage of leaky old shed? If the parts were all new then everything is usable but will need work. Powder coated bits will probably need redoing and a fiberglass body will more than likely moved if not fixed on a square frame for 10 years. As Terry said the engine, unless it has been turned over regularly will need work to make it usable as it will likely have corrosion in the bores. So it all comes down to what skills you have and how badly you want to build one? If you have been waiting 10 years perhaps cut your losses and buy one ready to go and get out there and have some fun. If you would like to email me some pictures I will be able to give you a better idea of what work is needed. feel free to ask anything on a PM as well. there are no such things as dumb questions. Again as Terry said, the car will need to undergo the IVA test which is over £400 alone now if it passes first time. There is a guy in Cornwall called John Watson, who did a number of builds for CKC magazine. He runs the company below using cars he has built from kits. He is based in Truro and might be worth having a chat, but he will not be cheap!!
