Silencer - need something a bit quieter

Hi,
 
Having now done about a thousand miles in my new bus, I've come to the conclusion that I could do with a silencer that actually does what it's called. I'm assuming this is the standard Westfield issue on at the moment - could anyone recommend a replacement please? It must be knocking on the door of 100dB at the moment - having come from a Termi shod Ducati which pushed out 96dB, the car is louder.
 
Ideally it would be nice to be able to talk to someone up to ~60-70mph
 
Other issues/winter projects are coming to light as the miles clock up :)

If it's a re packable can, try re packing with Acoustifill.    Will reduce noise about 2 to 3db.   Anything quieter it'll have to be a bigger can.

That looks like the standard exhaust to me which is the same as I had on my crossflow. It was loud! I replaced with a Motad 6" repackable silencer and it made a significant difference.

My current Simpson race exhaust is also exceptional but it's a different engine and a whole lot more money!

Wunoff do a good 6" can to whatever length and inlet/outlet diameter you want but use their ow blanket material rather than acoustafil. They are keen on price

I don't think there is an answer to this, unless you have 12 foot of exhaust system like a BMW

Ah, okay, well I'd like something a bit more civilised anyway. I'm currently driving with ear plugs in as its bordering on painful.

I also started with the standard Westfield silencer.

I then fitted a 6" Wunoff with Acoustafill which was quieter and was typically at 94 decibels when measured at track days.

I have recently fitted a 7" Simpson, which seems to now be even quieter although I haven't had chance to measure the sound level yet.

I have been impressed with the quality of both the Wunoff and Simpson silencers.

My megabusa with Simpsons exhaust passes the noise tests at Bedford no problem

I looked over winter and ended up getting the 6" repackage one from

Car builders solutions for about £230 and got good performance on the rolling road and less than 100db my old one was about 104 db

Last year Wunoff fitted me a 6" can with their own acoustic wadding and custom mounting bracket. Nice looking job. Db down from >105Db to 93Db. Not sure about conversation at 60-70mph though!

Any my of the big size aftermarket silencers, provided the bore of the centre pipe isn't too big should do well at bringing the exhaust level down.

 

However, in Westfields, a lot of the noise you hear from the outside can also be from the (individual) throttle bodies many of us use - particularly those that stick out through the bonnet. It tends to be a sharper, more piercing noise when on the throttle too. I ended up getting an air box in the end, as disputed having a huge Simpsons silencer on the last car, (which did make a great difference), it was the only way to avoid needing ear plugs all the time.

 

At 60/70mph and above though there is a third issue, which many of us overlook, as it doesn't effect track side drive by and static noise checks, and that is wind noise; because of the more subtle sound of the wind noise at speed, it's easy to overlook how loud it can actually get. 

 

If if travelling at those sort of speeds and needing to chat are going to be a frequent thing, then I'd really consider an intercom set up, it will be a lot more comfortable long term, and the head phones/ear pieces will give a little protection from the wind noise.
