Terry Everall Posted April 27, 2015 Share Posted April 27, 2015 Just heard a news item on radio 4 saying that from June this year the paper part of your driving licence is going to be abolished. If you need to hire a card while abroad then you need to go online to DVLA and generate a code which lasts for only 72 hrs so if you are already on hols in middle of stay you need somehow get online ?? Jonk179 Posted April 27, 2015 Share Posted April 27, 2015 It's to allow live licence verification to prevent people having a spare counter part that's free of convictions. The 72 hour period is going to have to be extended as it's just not practical in many ways. I work in driver and operator compliance and the new system has good and bad points. It will be of benefits to all fleets, it's just a case of using the correct method to manage it. It should cut down on the number of drivers on the road without licences or not driving in accordance with their licence. One of the most annoying aspects is the lack of publicity that has been given to the changes, it's been known that the changes take affect from June 8th for at least 7 months but as usual the government via DVSA has not got the message out there. Terry Everall Posted April 27, 2015 Author Share Posted April 27, 2015 Apparently if you cant generate a code you can ring the DVLA on their expensive line ( £3 per minute) and talk to someone.........but its not a 24 hr service!! I don't want to go on holiday and find out that I cant hire a car due to some cocked up bureaucracy I cant see how the paper part of the licence was an issue and not sure that kids hiring a car abroad are a major problem. The chap on the Alamo desk in Florida looked at my like I was a bit odd when I asked if he wanted the paper counterpart. It has now been destroyed and certainly won't be missed by me.
