anyone been to Myanmar?

Not been there, but as with everywhere I have been, you often have to step off the tourist trail to really see the best and most interesting stuff. Not sure if that's a very safe option in that neck of the woods though?

If you're going to be in Rangoon, then a must see is the Shwedagon Pagoda. Burma is a deeply devout country and there's loads of religious sires so if you don't see this magnificent example, there are many others dotted about the country.

We are contemplating visitng myanmar and Vietnam in January,

We're fitting it in with our regular trip to Thailand, not sorted an itinery out yet, but No2 Son has been so he'll tell us where we are going, I'll just sit back and enjoy the ride.

from what ive read its not quite as cheap as Thailand but then not a geared up to take as much out of tourism, we are doing 2/3 days in yangon at the beginning as we needed an address for the visa and i dont think the hotel is far from that pagoda, but then not sure where from there. i think mrauk-u and madalay. seems like overnight trains are pretty cheap for a cabin (think i read $40 somewhere) so we were thinking of using these interspersed with the odd hotel.
