Internet Advice

Going to swap my ISP from Virgin. ( Getting to costly )

 

Thinking of B.T. Any thoughts / Advice please .

BT do some really good deals like "Summer Deal" Winter Deals" etc.   If you only need web and email access and occasional Video streaming then the normal broadband is fast enough.  If you have teenagers in the house then you need Infinity broadband for the extra speed and that's if it is available where you live.   Treat phone and broadband service as any other service and shop around for the best deal when the contract runs out.

You are still going to have to pay line rental on top of your broadband cost, unless you already have a BT line?

I've been with Plusnet (owned by BT) for years - only ever had 2 minor problems both swiftly sorted out.  Download speed c. 11mb about a mile from the exchange (they do sometimes throttle it a bit at peak times).  Phone with 'em as well and pay line rental annually for discount - think it works out about £11 per month for the line.  Good deal through USwitch - should work out at about £14.25 per month for phone and unlimited broadband with free connection and a free router.

I've been with BT for a few years now. Not had any connection problems and reasonable speeds for a rural village. You have to play them at their own game each anniversary though. When your contract is due to expire, ask for your MAC code. They will contact you and ask why you are leaving. Say it is because of the end of you current "deal" and there are better deals available. They will offer a new good deal. I have been paying between £5 and, currently £8 pm for some years now.

I changed from Talk Talk std package getting about 3 meg and always losing the signal, to BT Infinity high speed broadband about 6 months ago, and it's been brilliant, 40meg, signal steady as a rock, and cheaper than TT. I pay about £25 a month for the BB and phone package, thats inclusive anytime calls.

And BT sport as well.

DITTO  Stuart, 7 years with PlusNet no problems, as a company owned by BT ( so they tell me) they use the same routers/equipment as BT, but they will actually answer the phone if you need to ring and have knowledgeable staff manning the phones . A neighbour recently switched to BT Infinity, the engineer was there for 5 mins to plug the router ( without making the guy run through and proving it was working) and he was off line for over 3 weeks, and even after BT changing his email address 3 times now over 3 months later they seem unable to supply everything promised and he spends days ringing out to BT Asia for hopeless information including a message to say contact us for everything on line, really helpful when you are unable to get online.

i was considering the same myself. i pay a huge amount for my tv/phone/internet from virgin and tbh i use practically none of it. the phone is only there for her indoors mum to phone in from OZ. she uses a card to call out on her mobile as the costs are vastly cheaper (something daft like 3ppm instead on 30ppm) idont use it as i have mobile. we dont watch any of the channels and tbh if i did want to watch something and i didn't have it as a channel i would use a web service. tivo is a bag of **** that seems to fill itself up with stuff ive not asked for (ever), we have a spare box that the guy insisted we had plumbed into the bedroom... "its on your package mate i have to fit it" its still in its packaging box!

 

to be fair on vigin the internet is mostly super fast and pretty reliable. but thats it.

 

i keep trying to see if i can cut it down but it makes little difference. their last price increase was the tipping point. a letter one week with a condescending pally tone saying they were really sorry but they had to put prices up for some crappy reason like fuel costs of Richard bransons  helicopter had increased or usane bolts shoes were more and he keeps wearing them out making s***ty add's and then a few months later i get one saying great news they are upgradeing the speed to 100mb for free!

 

its only my laziness that i havent changed. i spoke with one of the bt guys and an pretty much same package was at least £35 cheaper

Thanks for the input chaps.

 

Called Virgin to cancel and got  a silly deal ( App. 1/2 of what I was paying.

They said I was a long term customer (13 years) and it was a loyalty thing.

 

Amazing that they dont tell you this unless you do something about it.

 

Conclusion is I am staying with Virgin ( Until the next price rise comes along )

I got the same Peter, Talk talk promised me the earth when I called them to cancel, it was unbelievable the kind of deals they were offering, I reckon if I had asked for a BJ they would have sent someone round :laugh: But it was the unreliable signal that did it for me, it would drop off every time you logged on, 3, 4 or more times a night, you just couldn't rely on it. :angry:

I would have said $%^& you, if I was such a "valued customer" you'd have reduced my bills years ago. But then that's just me....... :p

I most certainly did tell them to stuff it , up Richards Virgin bottom.

 

But upgrade to 50 meg swayed me to accept the offer.

They are all quite expensive, especially by the time you add in the compulsory landline.  

 

I travel a lot so have been thinking about cancelling home ISP, going 4g and using my phone as a wireless hotspot.   Have just spent a few months in India using 3g for internet and performance was quite acceptable.

 

       Thoughts?
