Waterpump Conversion to EWP - Tonights Job

So tonight to wind down after work I decided to tackle the conversion of the water pump on the duratec engine to a water inlet from the electric water pump.

So to start off with I took the water pump off the engine and stripped off the O-ring. Using an angry grinder cut off the impeller and pulley mounting off the pump.

once this is don't the pump body can be put into the lathe and the front face lathed down to within an inch of its life. Once this is complete the shaft and bearing can be stripped out and the centre hole lathed out with a boring tool to 32mm. Now a piece of 32mm aluminium pipe is fitted through whats left of the water pump.

To fit it all together and make it water tight I then tig welded up the back of the pipe to the casting and then finished it back off with the lathe. Finally re-fit the O ring.

Finished result:

not a bad evenings work.

Edit to add: you can also get away with machining the centre to a tight fit for the flared pipe and just using Loctite 648 bearing seal rather than tig welding.

Very nice!

A Man of many talents including machining using a lathe and Tig welding aluminum! As well as being tooo fast in a westfield and building amazing engines and cars! Oh and I forgot his talent for wiring. So where do you find time for work?

Paul - your too kind. Its not work I find hard to find time for, its play time that keeps getting put back. After a long day at  work making the above is rest. Even the oldest daughter came into the garage and put on a spare welding mask to watch what i was doing, so I was even interacting with the kids as well.
